Baking Question - Food Color in Cake Mix?

Hey ladies,

I want to bake a cake for DH for Valentine's Day and I want to make it red.  He does not like red velvet cake, so I'm hoping to use a white cake and put food coloring in the batter before I bake it.  Has anyone tried this?

TIA!

I haven't but I don't see why it would be a problem?

I think that's how "rainbow cakes" are made.. Just with food coloring?

I have done this and it works really well. (Neither one of us likes Red Velvet cake but I like the red or pink color for V-Day and Anniversaries)
I used the liquid dye and I needed to use A LOT of it to get it red enough. The next time I tried it I used gel food dye and that seemed to achieve the color better and I didn't use as much of it (more expensive though!)
hth! :)

Jady, would you happen to have the brand name of the gel?  I have not seen that before.  I do have a purple dye from Wilton, but that is for frosting.  I'm so glad that you can do this because I'm planning on baking the cake and then cutting it out into the shape of a heart.  I'll try and remember to take pictures of it.  : )

Thanks !!

Absolutely.  You'll need to use a lot of you want it to be red, though.

Americolor is better than Wilton, in my opinion.  You can get it online or in cake decorating stores, and I think Hobby Lobby carries it now.

Laurasweet beat me to it!
I bought the Wilton brand at Michael's but didn't really like it that much. It may have been my imagination but I felt like I could taste the dye, kwim? Maybe if I was just using it to dye a small amount of icing I would have felt differently.
The other one I got was not Americolor but also started with an A. Maybe Alco or Aleco? I got that online at Amazon because it came in a set and had good reviews. It also had a red that said no-taste red or no-flavor red? something like that. Sorry, I am on the road and DH isn't home from work yet to check for me.

hth! post your results, please. I would loooove to see and hear how it came out! :)

It was probably Ateco.  That's a popular brand of cake decorating supplies.

And yeah, the Wilton brand has a "No Taste" Red, but I think you can still taste it.  Blech!

I'm going to be making some cupcakes tomorrow and will make the "surprise" cake when DH is at work.  I'll definitely take pictures.

: )  Thanks ladies for all of your help.

Okay, so I was not able to complete the cake due to my phone ringing off the hook yesterday, but I was able to make these:

Okay so I was photo 2710871-1 Before the oven.

Okay so I was photo 2710871-2After with pink frosting and white sugar sprinkles.  The red food coloring worked great!

Thank you ladies for all of your tips!!!

Thanks, they are very yummy, I even made homemade frosting with a maple flavor in it.  I have to watch that I don't eat too many and mess up my diet.  : )

LOL.  I never saw maple flavoring before, although technically I was never looking for it.  They did taste really good and I will tattle on myself, I have had one for breakfast.  : )
