Ok I keep gettin people telling me to use a bassinet before I get a crib but I've heard bad things bout bassinets. What should I do? I'm a first time mom tryin to figure a lot of this out an so confused. Also a friend told me she let me have her crib I trust her on the safety an stuff but I'm two months away from the due date an she hasn't given me the crib yet I've asked twice bout it should I keep on her about it? Or just give up on her giving me the crib an find my own? Only prob is I just lost my job an idk if ill be able to buy one what should I do????

We are using a pack 'n play with a bassinet feature in our room for the first month or 2 to help with feedings during the night.  When he grows out of the bassinet, we can use it as a normal playard.  We also have a crib set up in the nursery that I plan on having him nap in so he gets used to it.

We used bassinets for our twins, but only so I could feed one and put him in while I fed the other. We carried the bassinet into the nursery and they slept in them in their cribs for the first few weeks.

It was recommended to me because they were so used to being cramped up together that being put straight into a big crib could be tough on them

There isn't really a benefit to having a bassinet (IMHO), my sister never used them for her children, so if you aren't going to be getting the crib from your friend I would suggest putting the money towards buying a crib instead

I think generally bassinets are used so that the baby can sleep in the same room as mom for the first few months. Lots of moms just use play and packs that have a bassinet attachment or you can use a co-sleeper which is what I used with my first that I adored. (I had the mini arms reach co-sleeper) - I would definitely get a crib at some point though. My daughter wasn't in her crib until 9ish months but from that point until now (she is two) she has slept in it most of the time for naps and bedtime. She would be WAY too big for a bassinet, and would have been probably within a few months depending on the bassinet. I would decide how you are planning on sleeping with baby and then that should determine what you need to get. If you want baby to sleep with you then you really don't need a bassinet or crib. If you want baby in the same room with you then you could do a crib in your room or get a bassinet or play and pack or co-sleeper for the first few months and then transfer into the crib. If you want baby in a separate room from the beginning (which would be so hard in my opinion) then you would just need a crib.

In terms of asking your friend for the crib, have you offered a detailed plan to retrieve it?  Perhaps her offer is still open but doesn't want to deal with the logistics.  I would remind her again saying somehting like "Hey friend, I'm finally in the process of setting up the nursery.  Do you might I come by on Friday night to come pick it up? My friend can carry it out of your basement" etc.  Being direct like that will put her on the spot to give you a clearer answer from her, whether she says "sorry but it's no longer available" or "saturday morning works better."
