Birth Defect Tests?

Hey Ladies.

I just had my first prenatal appointment yesterday and they brought up the options of taking a few birth defect tests. One would be a vaginal test and the others would be sticking a needle through my stomach... Have any of you ladies thought about taking these tests or have you already taken them?

At first, DH and I were a little hesitant... we really want to enjoy our pregnancy and if our LO has a condition we will deal with it when he/she arrives... but then we thought the most responsible thing to do is to get these tests just in case our LO does have a condition and if so, we can properly prepare ourselves...

For the most part this would seem like a no brainer... but in the same sense, we are a little scared to do so. Have any of you felt this way? Is it normal to be a little scared?

Are you planning on taking these tests? Or have you already taken the tests? If so, what was your experience?

I know exactly how your feeling, I didnt want to take the test (last time) bc in my mind it was already my baby no matter what the outcome I would of loved the baby, DH wanted to know.

I am not sure what the 2 tests they told you about were but at around 12 weeks we did a blood draw and a sonogram to test for birth defects (I agreed this was a good idea bc I wanted the sonogram) if that test came back that there was a possibility of birth defects thats when we would have had to do the amnio (needle in your stomach).  We never got to the amnio so I dont know what our decision would be, we decided to take it one step/test at a time.

Honestly, I dont know if I could do the amnio... I think its a very personal decision.  The fact that the amnio can cause a miscarriage in a perfectly healthy baby makes me not want to do it. My advice is to just research it and do a lot of talking to your DH.

I haven't had any tests like that brought to my attention.  The only ones I've have been talked to about was just blood drawing, which I did sign up for.  They do a more advanced tests in Pittsburgh than in my hometown and offered that to me but the midwife goes "This isn't to offend you but if something is wrong like downs/etc would you terminate your pregnancy" and I was like "no way" so she said skip that test.  I agree with clips, research it and make a decision you and your DH are happy with.

I had the 12 week scan (for downs syndrome) and blood drawn to test for this and orher tests. Everything came back negative, so we never had to do the needle in the stomach.

I myself have a condition that I have 50% chance of passing on. It was important to me to know if our baby had it do we could prepare. The baby seems to be ok and it looks as if he does not have my condition.

I chose to have these tests because I know I would not be able to care for a child with mental disability for the rest of my life. Emotionally I just could not. I can handle anything physical, but in case of a downs syndrome, I would have chosen to terminate. I know that everyone feels differently about these issues. I am just being honest.

I agree that if there is nothing that will make you change your mind, then do not bother with the tests. Any "severe" physical abnormality will show on rutine scans anyway.

Definitely do the NT scan.  Its a great way to see the baby again.  Its a non invasive test for DS.  From those results, you can determine if you need further testing.

Thanks ladies... I think we will be taking the tests. :)

@clips- you're right. The amnio test. Thats what I was referring to when I mentioned the needle in the stomach... they say 1 out of 300 amnio procedures end in a miscarriage... YUP! That's enough for me to not want to go through that test. So I'm with ya girl.

Thanks ladies for sharing your stories and advice :)
