Breast Cancer Donation Favors: Need advice

I'm posting this for a friend of mine, shes getting married in May and was struggling to come up with a good favor idea. I suggested making a donation to a charity in her guests name, instead of a traditional favor, that most people just toss out anyway.

Her mother is a breast cancer survivor so I thought it might be nice to maybe donate by purchasing a bulk amount of breast cancer pins, this way we could put a card explaining the favor with a little something to take home. She loved the idea, but we really aren't sure how to go about doing this...We want to make sure the money goes to the right place...I know there was a bride on here a little while back that did something similar... any ideas on where to purchase these pins so the money goes to the right place.

Also any suggestions on something other then a pin? TIA

I love donation favors! I gave each of my guest an awareness bracelet. Some of my guests are still wearing theres and send me pics or show me at parties. it's so nice to see. My second cousin was diagnosed with her second lapse of cancer at the age of 5. During my wedding planning, she had rejected 2 marrow donations and was on her third. I decided I wanted to donate to her fund. If you check out my bio you can spot them on everyone during the reception.

I would start off by doing some reasearch on places that take donations for breast cancer research. I would make sure that 100% of proceeds went to research. Then I would DIY some cardstock with a sweet note and put a pin on each card. Here are what mine looked like.

Hello Mommy to be! I just went on the site, The Knot, and found two ideas I like. One was buy favors through the breast cancer site itself and another one was donating to the Pink Envelope Society in honor of the bride. I am a breast cancer survivor so I think this is a phenomenal idea. Click on this to go to the page.

Please be careful. I just watched a documentry on where the money for breast cancer research goes. Only 1% from breast cancer products go to research. The rest is for admin and advertising cost to get you to buy pink ribbon products. The American Cancer society gives 72% toward research. I just thought I would share this. the documentry is called Pink Ribbons Inc.

There are lots of pink ribbon items from rubber bracelets to teddy bears, to coffee mugs so it just depends on what you want to give. And lots of places give bulk discounts.

I think the idea of giving to charity is good just make sure you know where the money is going.

Thank you for these great tips!

Nicole, i wish i could see your favors, but the pics aren't loading for some reason...in fact, i checked out your bio and none of your pics were loading =P I'll try back later.

Tressy!!! Thank You for that link, I'm passing it on to my Friend as we speak. There are some pretty cool ideas in that list!

Zeuster, yes this was our concern, we really want all of the money to go towards the research...

I just read this article about wedding guests favoring edible favors over donation favors...which i found kind of selfish, but hey it is what it is...we still want to do the donations, but now I'm thinking maybe donate the money to the research directly and make cards up along with some kind of pink baked good, like mini cupcakes or rice crispy treats...or since easter just past and there is a lot of pink candy on sale to maybe go out and get pink Hershey kisses or pink chocolate cover almonds and giving that with the donation.

Keep the ideas coming ladies ;) Thanks
