Bridesmaids

Which bridesmaid costs are customary for the bride to cover? bridesmaid dresses? hair and makeup on the big day? spa treatment the day before + a gift?

Bridesmaids usually pay for their own dresses and shoes. Being a bridesmaid is expensive!

Paying for their hair/makeup/spa would be nice.

Here's a nice article on the not paying for bridesmaids' dresses:

http://www.wednet.com/articles/who_pays.aspx

It has some good ideas on how to make the experience better for your bridesmaids.

"The most traditional approach, approved by etiquette gurus of the 1960s, is that the bride chooses the bridesmaid dresses, and the bridesmaids grit their teeth and wear them without a murmur of protest."

My neighbor got married and her bridesmaids paid for everything (dress, shoes, hair, makeup) except the jewelry (which was their gift). Being a bridesmaid can get very expensive though, so if you have the money I'm sure your bridesmaids would appreciate your help.

For example, if you choose bridesmaids dresses that they can definitely wear again, then I think it's perfectly reasonable for them to pay for it. On the other hand, if you're going to make them wear something huge and puffy that will just rot in the closet and make your friends pay for it... you may want to change your mind or risk losing your friends.

My bridesmaids will be buying their own dresses, so I am putting most of the control in their hands of which dress to wear. I'm paying for their hair and makeup though, and may give them jewelry as an additional gift as long as it's affordable.

You're not obligated to pay for anything except for a bridesmaids gift. If you can afford it though, I'm sure your bridesmaids will appreciate your help. =)

My friend was a bridesmaid recently and she paid for everything herself and didn't seem to mind.

I've been a bmaid twice and each time the bride has paid for our dresses.  I've had to buy my own shoes and all the bmaids did their own hair and makeup.  I'm planning on paying for my 4 bmaid's dresses.

I will leave it up to them to buy their dresses and plane tickets and we will pay for everything else: shoes, accomodations, makeup, hair, spa, jewelry, and gifts

My BMs are paying for their dresses, shoes, jewelry, makeup, nails, hair, etc.  I am paying for their bouquets and still have to pick out their gifts.  They thought that I should get their jewelry for the day of the wedding as their gift, but everyone would get the same thing and I don't want to hear any complaining about someone not liking what I picked out.  Besides, I want their gifts to be VERY personal per girl.  They are getting some things identical (like the BM t-shirts), but other than that, they are getting something nice and expensive.

I've been a BM once, and the bride paid for our dresses, shoes, and hair.  We paid for our own make-up.  For my own BMs, I paid for their dresses, but I got them dresses they could wear again casually.  They provided their own shoes.  I also paid for their make-up; they paid for their hair.  And I bought them manis/pedis, as well as BM gifts.  I know how expensive being a BM can be (and a big time commitment), with the bridal shower and bachelorette party, so I wanted to help in any way I could.

I have been a bridesmaid 8 times.... yes 8 times. I have paid for everything except flowers and jewelry (usually a gift). My own bridesmaids will be doing the same and they will be recieving jewelry as their gifts as well as other trinkets. Being a bridemaid is very expensive, but it's an opportunity to participate in someone's big day. I'm fortunate to have great BM's that are willing to do whatever. =o)
