I think budgeting is entirely different for every bride, but I've liked a few guides I found online. I suggest tweeking it to your vision. For me flowers and cake weren't so important, but a photographer and a live band were. Oh, and our budget was ALWAYS changing as we met with vendors and all that fun stuff. Good luck!
Martha Stuarte suggests: http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/231224/wedding-budget-planner/@center/272419/youre-engaged#99935
Reception (Food, Beverages, Rentals, and Site): 40 percent to 50 percent
Flowers: 10 percent
Photography/Videography: 10 percent
Bride's and groom's attire: 5 percent to 10 percent
Music: 5 percent to 10 percent
Planner or Coordinator: 10 percent to 15 percent
Miscellaneous (Favors, Transportation, Etc.): 10 percent
Cushion: 5 percent to 15 percent
I didn't use a certain percentage to put together my budget. I decided what my total wedding budget was then I wrote down every detail I wanted . I then looked at costs from multiple sources. I knew the food and alcohol would be the most expensive. After I found the pricing of everything I wanted it was time to start tweeking it. I would just continuously move numbers around. I know for some this isn't how they like to do things. Nicole gave some great resources for guidelines.
I didn't use a percentage either - I just tried to find the best deal I could get... and a lot of DIYs! :)
Programs, invites, table names, stationary - DIY
Our cake was from Target - We had an 8 inch cake to cut into and sheet cakes in the back... HUGE saver!
Our flowers were ordered from Jewel-Osco and our friend put together our centerpieces and bouquets.
Our DJ had a higher rate for the summer, but since we were referred, they gave us a nice discount.
Our menu was adjusted to save about $10-15 per person, per plate.
My alterations for my dress was from a lady my MIL knew - It cost me a fraction of what the bridal salon would have charged me.
Hair was super inexpensive since I've been going to my stylist for some time.
There are ways to make short cuts and still have the wedding of your dreams! <3
I thought about some DIY projects but I have found it really hard to articulate what I see in my head and I get really frustrated. I also thought about the time that I would need to devote to those projects and between kids, work and school...I tell you it's madness in my head lol. We are going to make our guest favors ourselves though so that should help with some cost and I may be able to get a discount on my catering since I know the caterer and his family so that should help out quite a bit. I think if I can get a good deal on flowers I may be able to stay within my budget really well. You ladies have some really good ideas and even though I consider myself a wedding info junkie, some of those ideas have never crossed my mind before!
tdanford - Ask your friends/family for help!!!! The computer designing I am not good at... I had a LOT of help from fellow pwers who designed templates for me and I added my own flair to and printed it off my computer.
I was so afraid to ask for help from family and friends... When it got down to the last few weeks, I couldn't do it without them! So, don't be afraid to ask ;)
misshammy- I have that problem too. I kinda feel like I would be bothering people to ask them to help but I do have a few people that have expressed that they would be willing to help. I think I will try to find pictures of exactly what I'm wanting or even something that is close to it to help me explain what I'm wanting. That way I'm not frustrating everybody trying to get them to visualize what is in my head. I would really like to do our own STD's and invites, do you know of any pw people that I could reach out to that could give me some pointers? I found what I want but I really would rather not pay that much per invite.
I made my save the dates from weddingchicks.com they have free save the date templates! I designed them, printed them like pictures from Walmart, out magnets on the back of them, and sent them out!! It was a hit! For my wedding invites, I got the idea from Pinterest because I didn't see any that I loved. Pinterest is the best!!! And you can also get great ideas from Etsy !
MnP2013- Thanks, I have never heard of weddingchicks.com so I will definitely check them out tonight. I did see some really nice ones on Etsy that I think I may want to try myself to see if I can make them cheaper than buying. Thank you for the ideas!
Yea I meant look on etsy for the ideas lol then try n make them in your own way lol. Happy planning! Can't wait to see your ideas come alive!
Thanks, I'm crossing my fingers and praying that some creative gene is birthed between now and wedding time! lol
