buying maternity and baby stuff

Ok, so one of my BFs is pregnant and I went maternity shopping with her this weekend.  She also bought a couple of baby things, but not many because she doesn't know what she's having yet.  We went to a couple of consignment shops and when we were at one she picked up one of the maternity shirts and said that it would be great if she had a professional job then she looked at me because I have a professional job (she knows I'm TTC).  I wouldn't buy it because I think it's bad luck to buy maternity clothes or baby stuff before I'm actually pregnant.  The only exception I've made is I picked up a copy of what to expect when you're expecting because I found it at at a store going out of business, but I left it in the bag and put it in a drawer.  I won't read it yet.  Anybody else feel like this?  Like it's bad luck to buy maternity and baby stuff before getting pregnant or am I the only one?

My mom is that way but I just bought a crib set my MOH showed me because it was on sale and it is what I was looking for. I know weird but we know we want kids no matter if we can have them or if we have to adopt.

Oooh interesting thought!

I think it would be like buying wedding stuff before being engaged - it just feels awkward.

So, no, you're not the only one.  I think a book or two is harmless, but buying maternity clothes?  Not so much.  No matter how great a top is, there will still be more when you are ready for them you know?

Yes, awkward.  Then what if you bought stuff and it takes a long time?  You have all this stuff laying around reminding you that you don't have a baby yet.  That would stink.

I feel the same way.  I didn't want to plan my wedding before I was engaged and I won't be buying baby stuff before either.  I'm not supersticious at all, but I just wouldn't feel right buying it.  I see a lot of things lately that I would LOVE to buy (for baby) but I just can't do it!

oh I feel the same way. I haven't even announced to family and friends that we're TTC, because I don't want to get everyone's hopes up just in case.... That's why even though we've discussed baby names I refuse to seriously decide on any until we are sure we're pregnant....it's just too precarious. I've been thinking about picking up that same book at the library! Just like you, for some reason I'm hestitant to get it and start reading. SO I feel ya!

We talk about names but it's always very casual, not actually trying to pick one out.  A couple of our friends know that we are TTC, but our parents don't know.  I didn't want to get their hopes up either.
