Cake Cost??? Rediculous!!

Ok, so maybe I am just being naive...but I really didnt want to spend more than $500 on a cake.. We will have about 165ish people. All I want is a funfetti cake! nothing fancy! maybe a simple design on the cake, but again, nothing fancy.. the cake place wants to charge me $7 a slice!!! thats about $1000 ish for a stupid cake!!

what is everyone else paying for their cake??

i'm paying about $1000....i was shocked too...at a wedding we went to over the weekend, they paid $2500....

try ordering like 4-5 separate round layer cakes, in plain white icing....and DO NOT tell them that they're for a wedding....after secured my baker, i found an online review that said they did the above and saved HUNDREDS of dollars!

we were quoted from $7-$15 a slice based on the baker and design.

we decided to splurge on our cake.  we're getting a 3 tier that serves $100 for $1200.

I paid $350 for a three tier cake (PIB) which fed approx 125 pp. I'm in Southern CA, where are you located?

Yes, it is rediculous!  And what pissed me off the most is som eof them didn't even taste that great- or anyting to die over haha We paid more then $500, but we got a deal and I really wanted it how it was.  In hind sight I could have cut back the cost a little- but I was a set bride on what I wanted!

Just a thought...

keep your design simple (so labor charges come down)

Ask for a discount, etc.  Don't be affaid!

Keep looking around for better prices

Maybe don't get one fo 165 ppl, many guests may already be gone or won't eat

Yea cake cost is NUTS.  I have a cake in my profile that I love, and have come to the reality that I don't think it's going to happen.  They recommended that we have a smaller cake and have sheet cakes in the back, but I think we are going to go with a cupcake tower....it's still up in the air.

...and on that note- buttercream can look just as good!

(and IMO tastes better too!) haha although we have some weird PW'ers who like the taste ;)

HOLY SH**!  $1000?  Yikes... I thought ours was bad at $500.. we're having a 3 tier cake with chocolate raspberry and creme brulee, made from a gal from France.  The cake is AMAZING.  It doesn't taste anything like american "cake".. :D

Cakes are really hard work - I know because I have made a few wedding cakes. $7 per serving is very steep though. If you search around a bit, you should be able to find someone that does it for about $3.50-$4.00 a serving for buttercream, basic yellow or white cake and buttercream as the filling. If you do special flavors & fillings, it will hike up the price too.

I spent 8 hours doing a 4 tier wedding cake covered in fondant, 12", 10", 8" & 6" stacked. There is also work that goes into assembling a stacked cake as well, and that is done at the wedding.

I am in OC but I am getting married in Fallbrook. My problem is that my venue (the grand tradition) requires my cake to be from a licensed bakery, which I guess is very common.. soooo... I was looking into bakeries by my house, like French's Bakery, but they charge an arm & a leg to deliver to my site.. with that said, I am choosing to use one of the preferred vendors from the grand tradition, Jodee's Bakery.. but holy crap! soo expensive.. I emailed them back asking what i can do to reduce the cost..I had originally sent them this pic.. I havent heard back yet.. I asked about cupcakes as well.. I told them that although i absolutely love love love this cake.. I cant afford the cost and am open to options.. so we shall see

i agree with jackieg - that looks like fondant with candied pearls.  that's a lot of man hours to put together.

i'm no expert, but i would think that they are balls of fondant....individually rolled, with maybe some pearls pinned in there....i don't think they're jawbreakers...who knows!!  but pp was right...it's more the time/labor of making the cake than the actual ingredients (fillings aside)

i agree with jackie and kristeen...those must be hand rolled balls.  and the frosting is fondant so that's pricier.  probably why it's so expensive!

holy crap.. ok if they have to hand roll the damn balls then i totally get why its expensive.. i thought the balls were a pre-made thing you stick on lol...but i really have no clue what goes into making a cake.. i wanted to make it myself! haha...and i dont care about fondant.. i actually dont really like it.. im good with buttercream.. oh boy.. so this is what i get for waiting until the last minute to get a cake.. ugg.. (wedding is 3.5 weeks away)..lol

holy cow! get rid of the balls if it lowers the cost!! i dont know if you've heard of Porto's Bakery in Glendale. They make theeeee most deliciuos cake in the entire universe. They're huge too. They quoted me at about $3 bucks per person. and they design it however you want no extra charge (unless you want like fireworks and singing swans).
