Is it better to get buttercream icing on the cake vs. whip cream icing for appearance purposes? Is buttercream harder?
appearance purposes use fondant. its not so tasty, but look hella nice!! it wont wilt or melt in heat. or "sweat" as buttercream or whip will. buttercream i think is prettier than whip since its thicker. IMO
I actulally like the taste of fondant (I know, weird lol)

For just the 'look' I don't think fondant is worth it? Good bakers can make you a beautiful cake using buttercream.... If I were to choose between all 3 I would do buttercream...

I do agree with HMM, it's not worth the price, especially since most people pick around it. I call them wierdoooos llol
Fondant is good to stand up in the heat - I might HAVE to get fondant so my buttercream doesnt sweat or get goopy. Underneath the fondant is a layer of buttercream anyway when people eat it they peel away the fondant and have a normal piece of cake.

Just FYI... I wanted a smooth appearance but I'm a buttercream person all the way. So my cake baker poured a layer of white chocolate over all of the buttercream layers (mocha buttercream, meyer lemon buttercream and strawberry buttercream). We got the smooth look of fondant, but got to have a covering people would actually eat. See if this is an option!
Oh I love the taste of marshmallow fondant!!!!! I love fondant! Um I woulduse fondant or buttercream.
