cake tasting fee

i know i read on here a few days ago about another bride to be who was being charged for a cake tasting. how usual is this?

yesterday i emailed one of the two cake people i was considering to let her know that we went with another baker as we wouldn't meet her minimum cost with our guest count. i was shocked to get an email back from her today saying that i now owe her $20 for a consultation fee.

apparently, this little detail was on her web site but i certainly didn't notice it at the time and she never brought it up in any of our emails or at the consultation. i guess i have to pay her but i feel like i've been scammed - especially as we only met with her because she makes a special kind of cake we're looking for and she didn't even make it for the tasting!

Ugh... they did not even make the special request cake... Boo.  Did the website note this charge in font size 2 or something?  Like aprilxlirpa, we went to 3 locations, and they were all free... I did pay for 1 tasting of our catered dinner, and they were upfront about the charge during our first communication.  Sorry, aussie :(

That sucks... i would also be pissed..

I also didn't get charged for cake tasting... most of the time my baker would call me when he just made a certain cake for a wedding and because he makes so much he would give us if there is left over... it was just so yummy to go taste all those cakes..

I would be pissed about them NOW saying that you owe them money, well after you have already done your tasting.

It depends on the bakery. We went to one place and they didn't charge us, but they made one cake  with one flavor cake and one favor filling, no variety. But the other cake tasting we went to they charged us $30 for 4 people. They Had 6 different cakes, 20 different fillings and 6 different frostings. And they woud give you more of anything if you wanted.well worth $30.

I have yet to actually go to a tasting but when searching, I've come across one that said you can only taste 3 flavors & after that, you're charged a fee per flavor. How ridiculous!! My caterer is charging a tasting fee but he mentioned that up front @ our first meeting. I would be annoyed that she never mentioned that. Some people don't use computers(shocking, I know)...what about them? How are they suppose to know?

Aussie, it sucks that it came AFTER the fact and it sucks because you get penalized for exercising your right to make a choice.  In my opinion, tastings should be part of their business plan because it attracts new clients.  Thank God you didnt' choose them - you don't want to do business with people like that.

did you sign anything?  i would just politely point out that she didn't make the cake you requested (i.e. services NOT rendered) and that you will not be paying her $20....i would think she might back down...based on the fact that you will post a review of what happened...but if she still refuses...pay with a credit card, and then charge it back...

It was me you probably read about. I should clarify that I found this lady on craigslist, she is just starting her business in her home and she just isnt to the place where she can offer tastings yet. I asked her if we paid a little bit would she be willing and she agreed. we agreed on $25.00 she is making 3 different cakes and a few different fillings, frostings, fondants, etc.

so i guess a tasting fee isn't all too uncommon but it really was the fact she told me AFTER the tasting. i think i may suck it up and pay the fee but i will definitely be posting a review of the experience and will let her know how disappointed we were not to be able to taste the cake we really wanted. :(
