Calming medication for dogs?

I have a very high-strung small dog, whom I love, but I wonder if she's got ADD/anxiety.

Has anybody given their dog calming medications (like from PetCo, etc)? What was it like?

I really don't want to do this, but my vet said to give it a try.

we give our dogs melatonin when we know they're going to have a bad night (like in thunderstorms, 4th of July, etc). It really helps them knock out and sleep. I havent heard anything about giving them calming remedies on a daily basis  though.

I got something called Calm Down for my yorkie a couple of years ago from Pet Smart - it didn't work.

My vet gave me some meds for my maltese to take when it storms. She shakes, pants, and sits on my throat if she doesnt get them. It knocks her out pretty well. Id ask your vet for something like that.

I also saw something at a local pet store here that was called Thunder Vest or Storm Vest. It looks like a tshirt but its weighted. Its supposed to help calm them down. There were also things you plug in the wall, but I dont really know anything about them.

I went to PetCo and got my cats Felaway(put in their water) and a plug in calming thing that omits something to calm them and it seemed to work. I know they make products for dogs too though. I have a huge 3 yr old German Shorthaired pointer who is super energetic. Im also a huge fan of the Dog Whisperer who said with hyper dogs, the best thing to do it excersize, excersize, excersize! I didn't believe it would work all that well but its amazing. FI (a big cyclist and mountain biker) bought a product that attaches to his bike and the dog runs next to him. The dog loves it!! The minute you say, "wanna go for a bike ride?" Forget it! He's a maniac until he starts going, lol. I would suggest tirying the pooch out and maybe something from Petco. Can't hurt to try, good luck!

you can get a DAP collar or plug in for your dog it releases the same calming pheromones that are released in their mother's milk as a puppy. I don't think you can get them at the pet store but a lot of vets sell them or can get one for you the owners I've talked to that use them have had a very high level of success with it and it's something you can eventually wean them off of.

Have you tried giving here a really long walk?  If she is really high strung she may need 3 miles or so.  Or a good play out in the yard where she can run around a lot?  I would try those things first if you haven't.  A lot of times it's just pent up energy that can be easily resolved with exercise.  If you have already tried that, you can give her a gingersnap cookie or two.  The ginger makes dogs relax and it's natural and won't have any ill side effects.

Is she afraid of something or is she just high strung?
