clipping nails...

i HATE to do this, and luna likes to squirm.  by the time i actually get the clippers into position, she's annoyed and moves.  i'm soooo afraid of cutting her quick...so we've been taking her to petsmart/pecto to get it done.  but it's $10 a pop...seems like a lot of $$ over the long-haul.  any suggestions?  where do you go?

DH clips Stewart's.  He lays pretty still for him (which is amazing).  Then I file them with a rough fingernail file (a regular people one).  He doesn't like that, but DH holds him down for me.  We tried the pettipaws sander/filer thing but he wouldn't keep still for that.

I've been clipping dog nails forever, so its become easier over time. The first time you quick a dog sucks, but from then on its no big deal anymore and you don't worry about it.

I work at petsmart and ya that 11 dollars is steep! When we do our dogs nails, we cradle them like babies in our lap and they fall asleep and I do it then. We've been doing their nails once a week since we brought them home.

How often are you doing her nails? Try having your hubby hold her and feed her treats while you clip her nails. And do it as often as you can. Even once a night just holding her and touching the clippers to her nail without cutting, or do one nail per night. She will get used to it.

Sometimes if you have someone hold the dog from infront and you pull the leg backwards and stand behind the dog, they can't see you cutting and they don't freak out as much.

thanks, leslie...really good tips.  Which clippers do you find work best?  Luna is a terrier/chihuahua mix, so she's tiny, and her nails are black so it makes it really hard to see the quick :(  that's a good idea to do it frequently and try "faking" it so she gets used to it.

I love these bamboo clippers from petsmart. Get the style shown on the right, and not the guillotine style (left-those can split the nails).

ALSO, if you need a high value treat to get your dog interested. Try this stuff

ALSO if you need photo 1419168-1

It comes in a roll and you can cut it up for food or treats. We call it "puppy crack" at work lol because dogs will do ANYTHING for it.

Natural Balance also carries a line of it at petco for limited ingredient dogs.

Wow! Great tips!

For some reason our oldest dog won't let anyone clip his nails. He just pulls away or get his mouth really close to his paws as if he will bite. The pros/vets won't even do it. So he has to go under for him to get it clip. So since that is rare that goes under we just run with him alot and naturally it file his nails down.

He just sees the nail clippers or pedipaws and he gets all frazzled and try to destroy them.

These are great tips!

Charlie will not let us clip his nails. We have to bring him get his done. He's outside so it doesn't really matter much. Ella, we just put her on her back and I can do anything I want.

I stick my dog in the sink, and she lets me clip her nails no problem.

The biggest thing with dogs is that if you show them who's boss they will submit to you so don't give up or let go I know it's sad to hear them cry but once they realize you're not giving up they will give up themselves and let you do what needs to be done. When I first started clipping one of my dog's nails it was a two person job that included her freaking out but we never gave up and we can now do her nails by ourselves. Also, as long as you keep control of the head they shouldn't be able to bite. So check with your vet and have them teach you how to properly clip the nails.
