Cocktail table decor?

Is anyone decorating their cocktail tables?  I was reading my wedding book and realized I hadn't thought about these at ALL.  I know it's barely for an hour but I figure I should put something on there?  Our venue has these stone round tables.. maybe I can toss a tablecloth on them and... I don't know.. really cheap decorative something?  I don't want to spend a lot on this.

The book did make a very good point about providing somewhere for the elderly to sit, since an hour is long time for them to stand.

our venue has four low tables with chairs and four high cocktail tables on the patio with tablecloths on them.  i'm just having my florist put a 4 inch square vase on each table with a floating flower in each...nothing too involved.  and the venue puts groupings of votives along the low brick wall around the patio...

How about colored table linens with votives and/or a small floral arrangement?

This bride got creative, Martha style, and made these cute tissue paper flower arrangements for cheap:

I had four tall cocktail tables around the perimeter of the cocktail reception.  I had the linens fall to the floor and rented organza chair sashes to tie around the base of the table.  And like Beatie on top just had round vases with a floating orchid.

Spot - I thought your venue provides the tablecloth and votive candles. Is that only for the reception?

Otherwise, tablecloth and maybe sprinkle colored rocks or petals and some candles?

I *think* it's only for the reception, but that's a good point, I should ask.. I'm sure they'll cover the tables with their tablecloths, the votives I am not sure about..

Thanks for the input girls! It's really helpful to know what others did :)

We only had 3, so we just covered them with a CHEAP black linens I bought at Walmart and put a few more of our red votives out and sprinkled some red rose petals down- and waaaa-laa!  I didn't want to go over-board since the cocktail hour was in the lobby and would rather put the energy into the actual reception room.  So we kept it simple, I was the same as you- I didn't think of it until right before the wedding...  Its alwasy something haha

Well, I think it's usually the place where guests go in between the ceremony and reception ... but it all depends.  If you're having your ceremony and reception in the same place (I am doing this), then it's good to have that hour while you're taking pictures and the reception area is being set up.   For example, I'm re-using my ceremony decor as centerpieces for the reception, so I need some time in between to do the transfer.

But if you're doing your reception in a separate place from your ceremony, maybe it's not necessary?  It all depends on timing, I think.

We had about 12 cocktail and tall boy tables. Like you, I didn't want to spend much much on them so I bought vases from the Dollar Store, filled them with coffee beans and a tea light. I wrapped some $1 ribbon I found from Michaels, and put a tag on them. We also had our coasters on the table, unfortunately we only have picture of the not-so-great ones:

If it's an evening wedding, you could use small lanterns for a little bit of glow.
