corset vs strapless bra

So i have been having the toughest time finding something to wear under my dress.  Its strapless, w/ a sweetheart neckline.  Regular longline bras are too short for me, my torso is really long and they hit me mid rib.  A strapless bra, while comfortable, doesnt do much for containing the buddah belly.  I just bought a lace up corset from Fredericks, which is long enough and makes me look va-va-va-voom, but i dont know how comfy i'd be in that thing all day long.  I'd do a test run in it, but the stays mold to your body if you wear it longer than 15 min, and then you cant return it. And it wasnt cheap. I mean, this thing is tight!  Ive tried tummy control briefs ect in the past, and they always roll down and i spend the whole time pulling them up.   Any suggestions?  What would you guys do?  I need to find something soon because i am getting fitted in the next few weeks, but to do any real shopping i need to drive home to the bay area, and thats a ton of gas $.

can they build a bra into your dress? That is what my dress designer is doing. I don't along well with strapless bras and I would probably rip off a corset after an hour or two, so I was glad to find out that was an option

I have an uber long torso too and I also can't wear normal long-line strapless bras. They always fall down or hike themselves up above my belly button creating an awkward bulge. ;-)

What about something like this? (it's from victoria's secret)

I have an uber photo 65170-1

Have you tried Spanx? I actually just bought one and I'm going to give it a try. I really hope it doesn't roll down like you mentioned. We'll see. They should create one that has little attachments to your bra so it doesn't fall down...

If I were me, I'd probably wear the corset because it fits best. I'd try my best to get used to it.

Good luck!

Oooh, jharkins, thanks. I wonder if those would show through on the black dress I'm wearing this weekend... pesky cotton jersey, it shows everything!

So, I tried out the Spanx today. It was definately a workout getting it on, I'm sure DH would have been laughing if he saw me. I got the one that goes to about mid to lower thigh and the top sits right under the bustline. I wanted the full tummy/butt/thigh control. It was kinda warm today and it was kind of annoying to wear, I actually only wore it for about 20 minutes, put on my dress and walked around a bit, getting a feel for it. I really liked how it flattened my tummy and made everything look "smoother." The bottoms near my thighs were just fine, no creeping and it was seamless on my legs.

The top, not so much. It immediately started creeping down (just creeping, not rolling) and it definately created a little bulge where it rested. The dress I'm going to wear this weekend is a very thin cotton jersey, so it'll show everything... including dimples. ;-) So, I probably won't be able to get the little strap-to-my-bra thingys. But, this Spanx thing could be just fine under a heavier dress. I'm still debating whether or not I'm going to wear it, I might just get myself a regular slip and suck it in all day.

The crotch was kinda cool, it's set up so I can go to the bathroom without taking the whole darned thing off... I feel sorry for the women who wore these before they though up that genius idea. ;-)

So, I can't give you a good or bad verdict. I really like how it looked, but I'm not sure if I want to deal with tugging it up all day. I'm going to be moving around in this dress and I'm almost positive it's going to start to shimmy down. Sorry I couldn't be more help. I'd recommend getting one yourself and trying it. Maybe you'll have better luck. Or us long-torsoed girls will just have to be happy with elegant, sexy and constricting corsets. ;-)

I'm also debating on what to do. I purchased my dress from davids bridal and I like the idea of building the bra into the dress but I'm unsure if they'll do that. I was also looking into purchasing a corset from fredericks but I'm not sure how comfortable it'll feel. Hm, such a dilemma!

Hey girls, I've worn spanx before and here are my suggestions!

1. Go a size smaller. I got a medium and it really didn't do much. I tried on a dress (not a wedding dress) with and without it at home and there really wasn't a difference. A size smaller would have definitely made an impact or shrink a size like it says!

2. I'm 5'2" and it was way too long for me. I tucked it under my bra but it still wasn't the most comfortable.

3. Don't even think about using the slit! Enough said and maybe tmi

4. The 3 times I've attempted to wear mine, I've stripped it off mid event and stuffed it in my purse. Was it worth it? Maybe not so much...

That's my 4 cents!

what is everyone doing for cleavage enhancement for a strapless (basically) dress with a low, open back?  i don't see how i can get anything to work other than the nubra (which i have and have never worn and don't know if it works).  any corset like options for that?  my FI would be more than thrilled if i wore one.

i guess i should check that out.  i've boycotted fredericks because nothing of theirs has ever fitted me and i have to return it all.  their size that will fit my body is super ginormous on my boobs.  very frustrating and frankly ticks me off.  why does their lingerie/bras have to be so disproportionate in ratio from body size to boob size?  not everyone is fortunate enough to have the upstairs working for them (not yet anyway unless i can talk myself into or afford a boob job).  gggrrrrrr.

sorry ladies, i'm feeling frustrated about that!

I say go for the corset...no amount of spandex and foam does what a good ol' corset can.  And they are right, it does mold to your body and therefore is more comfortable over time.  So I say wear it and "break it in" so that come your wedding day it's comfortable.  Also, make sure you're not wearing it too tight.  It is adjustable, no?  You don't have to have the laces at the same width top to bottom.  A comfortable lacing is 3-1-3 (three inches wide at the top, one inch at the high waist and three inches at the hip).

I am a curvy girl, with lots of padding between my corset and my ribs, so I use stationary laces (ribbons or shoelaces)...if you're slender, you might want laces with a little stretch and can try lacing the corset with elastic (purchased from the fabric store).  I am not a fan of it, because it doesn't hold me the way stationary lacings do, but my slimmer friends can only use elastics or else the corsets are too uncomfortable.

Good luck!

I think the corset is the best way to hold things in, however, it is really uncomfortable...it is a trade off for beauty I guess =P

rebeccalenore - I sent you a PM about my experiences with Nu Bra...
