cutting back costs...

here is what i have done over the last week...

* no more menus... save a few $$

* we cut down our wedding by 6 people-- hard but had to happen

* no gifts to eachother on the wedding day aside from words of love and devotion in a card (what the day should be about anyway)

*  we really made sure to shop around for bm and groomsman stuff... i'm so glad i waited because we have hit up all the sales on everything!

any more ideas?  anything you are working on?  i hate the economy.

Yes, we're in the same boat...which is why I'm so thankful that I stumbled across this site.

1. DIY everything that I possibly can...Centerpieces (my florist is going to flip), menus, programs, wish tree, reception cards

2. DIY aisle decor including pew flowers whatever they may be and ordering our own flower petals for cake table, aisle, FG baskets (florist flips again)

3. DIY sweetheart Table.  I don't know what we're doing yet, but I'm doing it!

4. No decorations outdoors during hors D'oervres.  It's on a golf course...that will have to do.

5. Stick to exactly 150 people...that's hard

6. Possibly DIY the birdcage veil...

7.  Don't go over budget on anything!  Which is hard too!

8.  Maybe we won't hire a limo.  Nick has a new truck...that may have to do!!

9.  DIY makeup...this is a maybe...but dear daughter was a dancer and knows how to apply it.  Also, one of her bridesmaids is a cosmetologist so she can do her hair.

10.  Collect small basket stuffers for BM baskets and OOT guest baskets.  If you wait until the last minute, you'll spend more money.  At the Christmas Sales I've already collected Sachet, candles, diffuser, and large silk bag/purse that I bought in China for $4 for the bridesmaids.  I'll add flip/flops, maybe a shower cap, a towel...that spa sort of thing.

11.  Picked up Christmas Baskets 70% off, took out material, put in my own and made bathroom baskets.

12.  Told my daughter not to buy us gifts!!! We don't need them

What else?????

i suggested to FI that we don't do gifts as well. we're spending so much with the wedding and our holiday at that time that it'd be a stretch to buy anything worthy of the occasion at that point in time.

also, we're thinking of combining the menu with the placecard (name written at top of menu) to save costs.

i'm also negotiating a bit harder with the final vendors we have to book.

The only good thing about this economy is that there's awesome sales, but when you're at risk of layoffs (as I am)...this economy is very scary!

This is my first post.. *hi guys!* im in the VERY EARLY stages of planning my wedding.

You guys posted some great cost cutting ideas. Here some money saving ideas I've found on the web:

1)Order less cake- dont order enough cake for your whole guest count, many guests leave early or decline on cake. ex: if u have a 100 people in ur wedding, order cake for 80.

2) centerpieces dont have to be on every table. you can have flowers on every *other table* and then decorate the rest of the tables with less expensive items such as pictures, candles and etc.

3) rent your dress (i dunno how i feel about this one)

4)skip the party favors.

uggg...i'm having a terrible time.  i'm diy - ing a lot, but i still spend money at michaels and jo-anns like its going out of style.  and i'm having shoe crisis.  ok - crisis may be the wrong word but i can find cheap ones i like so much....

shoes alone is a good argument for a black and white wedding.  anyways - diy invites.  my favors are part of the table decor (little potted plants in mason jars at every seat).  print your own EVERYTHING.  hmmm...

etsy!

i'm using my girlfriends veil (something borrowed). so....thats all i can think of.  plus what everyone else said.

g'luck everyone!

I think that you are making a good desicion.... I have been cutting back on a lot I met with my florist and DJ and cut both by $1000 so a total of $2000, I shopped around for officiants, we are cutting ceremony programs, my b-pics even though it was so hard but I think that I might will still do them after the wedding.... We are also going cheaper on cake cutting sets and toasting flutes.... GL!

Brit, I'm also cutting my bpics for now.  Maybe I'll have them done for our first wedding anniversary.  :(  As for other cutbacks, I'm in DIY hell right now.  I have a ton of stuff that I had bought early on so now I'm trying to figure out creative ways to incorporate them into my projects.  Also, I've been looking around the office at stuff that may be thrown out for inspiration.  The other day my coworker walked up to my desk with a pile of cardboard that was being tossed.  She said she didn't know what she was going to do with it but it was perfectly good and would find something to do with it.  She asked me if I needed any for wedding stuff so I took quite a few.  Today I just realized I can cut them in half, wrap the cardboard in fabric I already had purchased, glue some cardstock on top and voila...our menus are done!  My best advice is be creative!  Look around your home, your office, your friend's home, anything!

we used live orchid plants as centerpeices, and if you go to the orchid farm and tell them you would like to buy in bulks, it will be even more cheaper.

We have been DIY ing a lot

INvites are a big deal... we went from $30 per invite to 10 through DIY

We are also doing our own florals because it really is one of the more simple tasks that we pay so much for!

Um Other than that we are pretty good.

So far we have 200 plus guests for UNDER 20k

My Mom found great deals on table linens and chair covers on ebay and craigslist. She bought them cheaper than it would be to rent them. And after my wedding, she can sell them to recoup some of the cost. It takes patience and a little time searching around, but it's worth it.
