Danger in the workplace?

I'm reading the book What to expect BEFORE you are expecting. It's pretty awesome so far. However it's making me realize some things that need to change before we start really trying.

One of my biggest concerns is my job. I work around dogs and cats. I am incredibly scared of Toxoplasmosis! Part of my job is changing cat boxes all day, it's unavoidable, It's not a task that I can just avoid the entire 9 months of pregnancy.

Also I am in a playroom with 15 dogs at a time, somtimes these dogs being over 100 lbs! I am afraid they may jump on me and hurt the baby. Also Concerns about the smell of feces making me even more nauseus in those first months.

AND I stand on my feet all day, can't sit down at all. Could be a problem.

OH and not to mention I adminster medications to dogs and some of them have possible side effects that could endanger an unborn baby. Such as DES, it used to be given to women for morning sickness until they found out it causes birth defects. Now it's just given to dogs for incontinance, but breathing it in, touching it, or anything is incredibly dangerous.

AH! So I've been thinking about a change of jobs. Even though I just started to work there in August.

Am I stressing out to much about this?? Do any of you girls have dangers and concerns in the work place?

I think you should worry about that when the time comes. No need stressing over it now.

I agree with Kelly. Also, maybe when the time comes and you're pregnant, your job can be a little flexible and they will ask someone else to do the things that may harm your unborn child. You've said you're not TTC for almost another year, so you don't really need to change jobs right now.

When you do TTC, you're employer is likely required by law to modify your work duties so as to not harm your unborn child. This is definately the case in Canada, but not sure how things work in other jurisdictions.

So the law is that as long as I can do my job with "reasonable" acommodation it won't be a problem. However I don't see how my boss is going to not make me stand, work with the dogs, cats, or adminster meds, when those are my only job duties.

Then the other options would be to switch to a position in the store, which eliminates some of the problems, but it pays a LOT less than I make now and almost wouldn't be worth the drive (jobs in another city).

I know that it seems far in advance to be worrying about this, but I am just one of those people that thinks about situations from all angles and I like having everything as put together as I can before it just falls into my lap and smacks me across the face. Always been that way...

So just trying to be prepared, because who knows, we could be blessed with an unexpected miracle sooner than we thought!

I applied for a job with the county motor vehicle office. It pays almost twice as much as I make now (score!!), doesn't involve standing, adminstering meds, or working around animals or chemicals, will be mon-fri 9 to 5, and has WAY better benefits than I have now (though what I have is ok).

They called and said my app has been sent up for further consideration and that I will get a call in the next week from the admin to schedule an interview. Fingers crossed!
