Designing your own wedding dress?!

Hey everyone,

So I have a relative who is willing to make a dress that I had a vision of and designed. I'm not a legit designer or anything, but I trust my relative. I'm curious if anyone had their own dress custom designed or made for them? If you did, what tips would you have for me?

My relative told me we could start the dress two months before the actual wedding date giving me enough time to tone up, but I'm unsure if it's smart to sart that late.

Hey Emma!

Welcome to Project Wedding :)

It's awesome that you have a relative who is able to do that.  Have you seen their work?  The most important thing is that you trust them.  Whilst my dress was made to measure, it was from something I had chosen in the shop.  My first fitting was a few months before the wedding - I think every dress maker has different time frames - but if your relative thinks she can do it in 2 months then go for it!  Maybe if you reach your ideal weight a bit earlier you can start sooner?

Looking forward to seeing your dress coming together!

I know a lot of brides that whent to a simstress and did their own wedding dresses and they all looked beautiful!

But it must be an experienced seamstress and someone that you trust that will do a good job!

Thanks for welcoming me ladies!

-adamsapple & leni8: I definitely trust my family relative. She makes everything from clothes to stuffed animals. She actually made my sister's dress for her wedding, but her dress was much more simpler than mine. She got married in Maui and had very simple, sleek dress which was put together in two weeks! I'm going for something a little more complicated and detailed, and I guess I was just curious how other women went about the self-designed dress process. Since I'm not looking to loose weight but just tone up, I don't see any harm in asking to start sooner than May.

-Fearce: I loved your bio and how well you spoke of your man =) I tried looking up your dress sketches on the page you sent me, but it said it was private. Hence, I couldn't check them out. =/

Hey Emma, first Welcome to PW.  I did not have my dress designed, but that is such an awesome idea if you know someone who can do this.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product!  : )

I designed my dress for my first marriage, it was so much fun.
My only thought is around timescales. I personally would want it started sooner just so I knew it was done. I think I stared mine about 6 months out and then had time to play around with accessories etc

I can't wait to see your design!

Welcome to PW!!

Such an exciting time for you, I cannot wait to see all of your wedding ideas. I designed my dress with a seamstress and it was beautiful!

I would look at a lot of different dress and see what you like, and maybe even go try some on, especially for necklines. Also, something I had to keep telling myself, not to worry during the process. Each time I went to try on the dress (about once a week) I had to keep reminding myself that if it looked odd or bad, it was just the beginning of the process. It can be a stressful time because you are seeing every single step of the process, not just a complete beautiful dress. But at the end of the time, it was PERFECT! Having a dress I designed made me SO happy.

welcome

honestly its up to you if you can really REALLY depend on her or here is another option ... a option that i went with ...i bought a dress that i love but ...YES there is a but... i wanted the dress to be different like no other so i ask my Renee if she could do something different with the dress and she said she could ...i dont have pic yet because its not ready but when it is i will post....you can do that so she will not have to start from stratch and that will give her enough time to do it... .another thing be careful with losing weight...sometimes when we tend to lose we actually gain cause we so stressed out about losing ....trust that happen to me ...
