DH and Childbirth Classes

Have any of you started childbirth classes?  DH wasn't exactly thrilled about having to go to them but the 2 ladies that teach ours make it really laid back and fun.  Plus our class is about 7 couples and we're all around the same age so I think that helps too.  After our first class DH was actually like, "ah those aren't so bad, I'm glad I get to go with you."  So it's nice when he has moments like that.

Well after our 2nd class where we actually learn a lot more about the labor process, of course the topic of epidurals comes up and what not.  Well with my current "situation" we aren't exactly sure if I can even get one so DH and I look at it like, I just plain can't and that I'm doing this the "old fashioned way" ( or as we term it, the Amish way haha since we live in an area with a large Amish Community ) Well after one of the videos and the woman pretty much in some serious distress and pain, DH leans over, rubs my back and goes "don't worry babe you got this."  It's so nice knowing he has my back and that he thinks I can handle this.  He's sadly mistaken, I know I'm going to be a basketcase but it's nice knowing I have his support haha!

We just started our childbirth classes last night.

DH was the only guy taking notes like he was back in College. It was really cute to see! He seems to enjoy it and is learning a lot.

There are 7 couples as well including us and everyone seems to nice so far. For the first class we've learned so much and Im more scared of labor than ever before :( But there's really nothing I can do now, no turning back huh? This kid has to come out some how!! OUCHH!!!

I cant wait for my breastfeeding class!

AuntTate... obviously it's way too early for me to start taking childbirth classes, but I definitely plan to! I think they're a great idea and even more helpful when DH can go too. :) So cute how your DH is being so supportive!

On another note... Amish country?! I'm originally from Lancaster County (just moved 3 years ago)!

I just confirmed our child birth class today - we go in June! I also signed us up for the L&D tour at my hospital and I need to sign up for a breastfeeding class still.

What type of classes are you taking & where did you find them (local paper, website, etc.)?

@Martini.....DH asked me if I was going to be my true nerd self and take notes! haha But I agree, I'm freaked out about going into labor haha.  I completely change my mind on this whole baby thing.

@Jenny.....We live in Northwestern PA, so we're kind of far from Lancaster but still have an Amish Community.  My In-Laws have Amish neighbors right across the street haha.  Oh and Breaking Amish, isn't even close to how our Amish live! haha

@DansMrs.....we luck out that our classes are held right at the hospital and a tour of the L&D area is part of our class.

@Mar.....My OBGYN office told us about them and in our area we sign up at the hospital.  We're a small town so I'm not sure if they are all like that or not.  I think our classes are probably like the basic old school lamaze classes.  They're pretty laid back, give info and answer ANY question you have haha.

Aw that's so sweet he's being so supportive :) We're signed up to take our class next month, so it's good to hear that they're helpful. We did the maternity tour at the hospital last night and I'm all registered to deliver there. Woohoo!

@Mar I googled as well as found the classes on my hospitals web site.

@Tate we were originally going to attend the class that the hospital offers but then in one of my searchers I found a cert. midwife that facilitates classes that worked better with DH's work schedule who also is cheaper! :) Score! And I agree, in the back of my mind I get scared of L&D and am I crazy that I'm hoping for natural birth w/o an epi?

@DansMrs......A natural birth with no epi may be my only option so you and I can be scaredy cats together haha.

We have done the bradley method classes for the past 12 weeks- its a natural childbirth classs. We practice the relaxation techniques, postions, contractions, and a labor poses... those might be things you want to start doing. Talk about what relaxes you- images, rubbing, music etc. Communicating about it now will decrease stress during labor! GL!

It's still too early to take classes yet, but the women's facility at our local hospital does them and provides a tour of the facility.  I managed to find this on the hospital's website, but my friend who is an LD nurse at the hospital also filled me in on stuff.

we took childbirth class and cannot recommend them enough!  We took a took a weekend intensive course through Tribeca Parenting (for any NYC lurkers) and it was extrememly helpful for both me and DH.  We learned both the birthing process, some preparation exercises, pain relief massages and what ifs scenarios.  We did splurge on this course, paid almost $400.  But we def feel a bit more confident about the whole process.

I also recommend breastfeeding classes!  I took this class at a local hospital for $35 and it was still very informative. Also went to a free LLL meeting which was just as informative.  THe only difference is that I kept staring at other mothers feeding their baby!  I felt like a pervert but I was so fascinated and wanted to see how it was actually done, ha!
