Did you pay upfront or use Credit?

I had everything planned out and was expecting to have the wedding paid for before our actual wedding day so that we wouldn't start our marriage out in wedding debt.  Things may not go as planned and we may be about $3,000-4,000 short.  I'm kinda bummed cuz I don't know what I was thinking before when I first calculated everything, but obviously I lost my brain somewhere in between and miscalculated somewhere.  Now I'm wondering if it would be ok to put some stuff on credit or if we should just cut our guest list, do non-floral centerpieces (wedding is on V-day = expensive flowers), etc.  What did you all do?  Did you charge some stuff?  If not, what are the things you did to save some money?  I'm so confused right now and am in such a "bleh" kinda mood :-(

Thanks ladies!

We've paid for most everything up front with cash.  There are some things we charged to protect ourselves (i.e. my dress, our travel) in case there was a problem but they've since been paid off.  (but our overall expenses are MUCH lower, I'm sure, than most, since we're doing a small wedding moon.)

I definitely had to make adjustments.  As a matter of fact. We are still a little short on money to. You under estimate how much it is and next thing you know.. bamb!  Some people are more fortunate than others to have Family Funding.  Some of us other folks are going at it all alone.

Made modifications that still make you happy. Flowers on Valentine are a dangerous thought. There are seriously some great alternatives.  Put value where you want it most.  My Sister forced me to react on the mess that was my guest list.  She said many of the people on there I was just inviting to invite.  She said to go with Quality over Quantity. You try to feed 1,000 people you'll have to feed them all on $1 !!! you try to feed 100 people.. then you can afford to be extra good to them.  That kind of a deal.

Do your homework on projects that can help you save money. Shop around. Find the deals.  I myself can't afford anything!!! so I hit the pavement and find the deals and make modifications where I can. I don't go for what everyone else has but I try to take some of the things I like and tweak them to fit me and my budget.

My personal motto.... if I dont' have the cash on hand... I'll have to come back when I do. If I do.

Just saying.

we're paying up front. we had a lot of time to save $. to cut costs on centerpieces, my friend bought orchid plants from downtown LA. She put them in a beautiful pot and nice rose petals strewn about. It totally looked chic and contemporary. there are totally ways to have nice centerpieces that dont involve fresh cut flowers. good luck!

i think you have the right mentality of not starting the marriage off in debt! you go girl! now stick with it! thats what we are doing and have cut the guest list to 75. to everyone who is not invited (casual friends we see out and about here and there) we're just telling them that we're having a small private wedding. most people will understand. we're only inviting family we are SUPER close with. IE, the ones we see at family functions and holidays.

We've got some vendors that are cash only, DJ, Reception, Photographer, and flowers were the big ones. When ever we get some extra cash, even if its just $100 we bring it to one of the cash only vendors so we don't have a huge balance to pay 10 days before the wedding. The other things like honeymoon plane tickets and dress we put on our credit cards to make sure the cash is open for the cash only vendors. We pay off the balance as soon as we can though as to not get too far in. We've said we won't let the credit card balance go over $1,000 and so far have stayed with that. Its what has worked for us.

Good luck!

Thank you nee and marina!

I totally understand what you're saying Marina.  Here are the things I'm going to try to work on:

  • Flowers (any ideas for non-floral centerpieces?  Our bridesmaids are just going to carry one long stem rose each)

  • Guest list (cutting it down)

  • Wall drapes (we really aren't too fond of the walls, so we wanted to cover them, but it'll be an evening wedding so if need be, we'll do without those)

That alone should cut the costs. If anyone else has any ideas, please share.  I need to just figure this out and stop stressing!  I'm giving myself a headache!  I'd love, love, love to have it all paid off beforehand!

It was super hard for me to just plan out a budget haha! But, we know that we do not want to spend over 20,000. Which is easy. And like everyone else we are paying for everything. I do not think we have even went over 10,000 so so far so good. haha. But we paid for most of the big things first. LIke the Photographer, DJ, Church, Reception and everything else we are going pay check to pay check using and buying things like decorations I see on sale at Michaels, Hobby Lobby or Jo anns. I agree with the other ladies.. IF you can make it.. DO IT! haha. It is so much cheaper and its a lot more fun! Then you get the bragging rights when its all said and done!

We didn't go with big flower centerpeices because they were expensive and plus you can make your own center peices. You can do Tree center peices (Manzeta Branches) with crystals or hearts hanging from them.

or <a href="http://s124.photobucket.com/albums/p6/keetom/?action=view&current=32_641.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p6/keetom/32_641.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> I thought this was super cute... and You could put it in a nice fancy pot.

I really love the idea about the draps! We wanted to have a sweet heart table and then drap fabric behind us to have a dramatic, beautiful look. I would def. suggest ebay! Yes EBAY! They have CHEAP and beautiful fabric! Just measure the height or your was and then order. I think fabric brings in a romantic and elegant toiuch! I really hope this helps! Good Luck on yoru up coming wedding!

Cootiebug, I used your link and was able to see the pic :)  We're looking to have our centerpiece color be red!

WM, your pic shows up and you're right!  They seem so simple yet very elegant.  Oh and of course your wedding is next year...I told you I'm losing it right now!  lol

we're paying cash up front

what we did early on was to make 4 or 5 things a priority and "let go" of the idea of perfection

for instance - we are not spending alot on invitations b/c it's just paper and people will throw it away anyways...  we are using online rsvp and phone ONLY - again, to save a small tree, and it's more convenient

We are paying for all of it up front. My parents are paying for the wedding, but the weird thing is they are the cheapest people I know. They do not want to put thousands of dollars to make their daughters day perfect, but they have no problem setting up a 30,000 coffee bar in their home so my step mom can have her fix (hard feelings... I know). I do not want to spend that much anyways which is a good thing, but anything my parents wont pay for we will. We are probably going to pay up front if we can.

I put it on my credit card becuase its easier to dispute charges if anything happens, and then I pay it off immediated if I have the $ in the bank ...I also get points for using credit, hopefully I can get a nicer hotel room with the points =)

Well me and my fiance sat down way before speaking to our parents to set out a budget. We agreed to it and decided to start saving first and to cut a few things because we believe that there's no need to spend a huge amount of money  to have the wedding of our dreams... or spend money on meaningless things.. we were hoping to have 150 guests but somehow the list grew to 200 and we are really hoping to have less people... My best advice to you is to start cutting things.... that will help alot..
