Discount Pet Supplies/Cat Tree Help???

Well, this thread has a dual purpose.

DH and I are shopping for a cat tree to hopefully help keep Schoasti from scratching up our stuff and sleeping on the couch.

Holy cow they are EXPENSIVE!  And I'm not sure why? ? ?  The cheaper ones have microfiber/plush fur (we want carpet for scratching) or are wobbly.  We are actually thinking about making one. . .

SO, two questions. . .

a.  Has anybody made their own cat tree?  Recommendations/advice?

b.  Anybody know of any discount pet supply stores online?  There are closeouts for clothes, electronics, etc. . .but how about pet supplies?

TIA!

I haven't made one but I did buy one a few years ago from Amazon.  It was a little wobbly but I bolted the sucker to the wall!  That thing never moved again!  LoL!  Whenever we get a house (hopefully soon!) we're going to build the cat a ledge near the celing with stairs up the wall so she can climb up and spend her time looking down on everything.  Not sure why cats like that so much, but that's what we're planning!

MB I've made my own...Well actually my grandpa made it (I don't trust myself with a nail gun)...but it was super easy.

Really all you need is some good sturdy wood, and old/extra carpet. I went to Home Depot and told the lumber guy what I wanted to do...and he was super helpful with picking out what types of wood I would need.

My mom had carpet left over from when her house was built so I just used that, and my grandpa did all the labor.

I think my total cost for it all was about $50-75.

Thanks guys!

Yeah we're thinking we'll just make it. . .none of the ones we've seen in our price range really are what we want.  One had a wood scratching pole too (smooth finished round post) that we thought was kind of cool so we want to incorporate that too.

Thinking about hitting up the Home Depot for carpet scraps. . .hmmm. . . .
