DIY and florist?? Is that OK??

So I have a dilemma...I am thinking about DIY-ing some of our wedding decor, including the decor for the "altar" area where we are getting married. BUT - I am also hiring a florist to do the centerpieces and my bouquet, ect. Originally I got quotes from him for everything but for some of the stuff I want I KNOW I can DIY it for less than half his price.

Is it OK to do that? I don't know how to tell him 'no thanks' for the ceremony decor, at some point he'll see us bringing in the 5' manzanita trees I want to have with votives hanging off.

What should I do? Nothing is finalized with him yet, we have been emailing ideas and edits to the initial proposal back and forth.

Of course its okay! If its not yet in paper its okay, you don't want to pull any contracts but afterall you are the client and the customer is always right.

I agree - totally OK, especially if you don't have any signed contracts.

I'm going to be in kind of a reverse situation b/c I'm going to make my hand-tied bouquets and the centerpieces myself - but I'm going to contract out the corsages and boutonnieres (10 groomsmen plus FILs) I don't think I will have the patience to make those before the wedding!

I haven't signed any contracts yet...but I am signing and sending in the deposit this week. The contract doesn't specify all the details, it's very general, because I can make changes up to 3 weeks before the wedding.

I'm just afraid I'm being an a-hole because all along we were going back and forth with ideas and he's under the impression they will be doing all the decor. I guess in the end it's my money and I can have him do as much or as little as I want right?

Yes, it is fine. If he gets angry over something silly like that, he's very unprofessional.

You can have what ever you design at your wedding. Often most of the design comes from many sources and the florist only supplies what you request. If he gave you another impression, just call and tell him you are thankful for the aspects he will be contributing and you will be having some other floral and decor designed and brought in as well from other sources. I am sure he should be fine with what ever decide to work with him on. I hope you are having a DOC to help coordinate your DIY aspects...
