DIY wedding cakes.

Well the cake I wanted is something like thisWell the cake I photo 48555-1Well the cake I photo 48555-2

I got a quote for 2500 for this cake :(. But then I realized that I love to bake! So I am going to bak the bottom layer so we can cut the cake, but the rest will be styrafoam! People will be served from sheet cake in the kitchen and my cake can stay pretty and cheap all night. No one will know it is fake either because once you lay the fondant on , it looks just like a cake! So if anyone else is having a fondant cake you can save a lot by just making a dummy cake and serving sheet cake from the back! My cake will probably cost $150, which is great for our budget!

do a trial run before hand, fondant is very tricky to work with, and htey make it look easy on t.v.

I know, I have a lot of experience with it, but not wedding cakes, just birthday cakes

my baker actually told me they don't do "fake" cakes anymore due to the time and effort...she said the same thing as Jess....that it's actually harder to work with fondant on the styro...due to the fact that it weighs nothing....

I know, I personally think that fondant is rather easy to work with. I love it! I really hate the crumb coat though, esspecially when you are not putting fondant over it! I love the look of the cake and I have done a couple trial runs, but I think it is a lot easier with styrafoam than trying to bake a cake that wont callapse.

$$$2500??? Thats CRAZY! Maybe you should shop around more? I have seen many vendors in my area that makes them, but they were never that much?

If you can DIY thats talent- BUT I personally couldn't do such a task right before the wedding haha So styrofoam may be the way to go haha

- HMM :)

I spoke to a bunch in Phnx and in Tucson, I think I called like 30! I had three consultations and they all said 2500-3500 because The work that has to go into it to make it a "mad hatter" cake. I was so amazed. I just finished decorating a completely styrafoam mad hatter cake with fondant and icing, and it looks great! Like the photos only pastels!

In the beginning of my planning I convinced myself I could make my own cake. I went to a couple classes and all the classes cost more than a cake would cost so I dropped the classes and I'm having a family friend bake my cake super cheap!

Yeah a family friend offered to do it, but I really wanted to have an excuse to bake sweets yummy! I have only ever made two tier birthday cakes with fondat, so I think it will be nice to experiment with the mad hatter cakes. I never took any classes, I just read a lot and practice.
