Do you think I have a faulty flash?

My 580EX ii has not been all that reliable so far :/  At the wedding on Saturday I changed my batteries twice within 30 min because it was only firing 1 out of every 4 or 5 shots.  I am even using the CP-E4 battery pack.  I have several brands of rechargeables so I don't know if that makes a difference?!  I was not doing a lot of rapid firing or anything and when I did it still would only fire a fifth of the time so the batteries shouldn't get as hot as they were.  I had the primary shooter feel them and she couldn't believe how hot they were...we're talking burning my hand hot :(  I know some external flashes can overheat & the outside of the flash itself was quite warm.  I am not sure what normal is in regards to these flashes, but I was waiting ~30 seconds in between shots & I would cringe a little and think "please fire...please fire" during important moments, and many times it didn't :(  I ended up deleting soooo many pics during the reception because of my flash.  I have had the flash for exactly 4 months.

What kind of batteries are you using?  It could be the flash but I find that when it's a performance issue and the batteries are heating up like that (it's the batteries heating up, I'll bet if you take them out, they are what's hot) that its the batts, not the flash.

I have owned 6 580's and used a few II's but have never had an issues unless it's the batteries themselves.

Try just going and buying 12 regular ol' AA's at the store and try that.  Then you will know (more than likely).

Thanks.  The primary shooter did give me some regular old AA's during the reception & they got a little hot, but nothing in comparison to the rechargeables.  That being said, they still (straight out of the box) only fired my flash about a fifth of the time :/

What brand rechargeables do you recommend?  I have 4 different brands...cannot remember all of them but I have some Sanyo Eneloop's, Pearstone's, and Energizer's (I believe).

I recommend and only use Powerex Maha's - 2700s are the best.  I think you might need to be consistent with the batteries as using several at different levels can cause a problem.
