Dress for Plus Size Girl

Okay, so here is where I'm at in the planning.

  1. My family is in Jamaica, and his will will fly down.  We also have friends who have committed to flying in as well.

  2. We've agreed on Jan 2014.

  3. We've agreed on the venue, Strawberry Hill

  4. We're working with an event planning company, in Jamaica- friends of my parents.  I tried to discuss pricing but she said we'll sort it out later. I'm just praying it won't be too bad.

  5. We're working on the wed site- FI dad designs sites and I think we can ask him to help us build a site. Sounds kinda weird but I'm pretty sure he'll bill us, but like I always say, "Ass, cash or grass, nobody rides for free!"

  6. I suppose that leaves us with the STD, invites, deposits, finalizing the date, photography, flights, and FINDING THE MONEY, lol

  7. And that leaves me with the dress. So....about that...I was just going to order something online, but I figure its best to actually go try some one. I love the idea of the keyhole in the back and a lacey affair...but I haven't seen any plus size women in lacey dresses...so I'm  a little lost. Help?

These are only my opinion and come from my experience being a current size 20 and was a 28/30 when I started trying on gowns. I have purchased 3 gowns to date and if you tend to lose weight from stress don't do what I did and buy too early.

Lace dresses come in all styles! From Ball Gown to Pencil and mermaid styles!

Get a Good Girdle/Spanx whatever you want to call them before you try on dresses!

What is your body shape? Apple, Pear, Triangle, Inverted Triangle?

Empire which a lot of people choose for bridesmaids dresses because they do work on all body types will often make a Plus Sized look Prego and trust me that is not what we want.

ALine has been the most flattering on MOST people and looks amazing on me.

I also love Heart shaped Corset dresses on Plus sized girls because it puts the attention on your eyes and your girls and not on your tummy!

I found a Lace gown that I LOVED it was tea Length and it had caped lace straps and heart shaped bodice, but I did not have time to have it ordered.

David's Bridal has a large selection of these and a good bridal shop can make your dress for you if you have the time and the money.

Hope this helps!

Wow, it looks like you have been getting a TON of things done!!!

I'm not sure if your FI's father started designing your website, but we do have a free one here on PW.  That might help with your budget.

Regarding dresses, I searched real quick for you on David's Bridal website and there seem to be a few lace dresses.  I didn't see any of the backs, but here is the link to their Woman's collection.  There are some very gorgeous dresses for a reasonable price.  : )

HTH!!!

Holy Crow, you guys are amazing! Thanks so much.

@Ido, those are some awesome points.  I didn't even think about the shilloutte etc. And I had no idea that the size ranged so much!  How do they figure that a size 20 in street clothes is a 28/30 in wedding attire?! Am I the only one who thinks that's madness?! I will start the hunt for a girlde then. Maybe next week I can cross over to the states to check things out.  I was thinking A-line maybe with a bit of crinoline to give it a bit of poof?  Does that make sense?  Got it, no empire.

@Becca,Lol, Yeah I have. I went to Ja this past month to visit my family and they were very ...energetic about the whole thing. Where as I'm a little too laid back (terrible stereotype, lol). Thanks so much about the wedsite. We'll look into it as well. Every little bit helps, kwim?  Thanks for the DB link, I am still very lace committed but get a load of these dresses! Drooling!

Too bad this dress doesn't come in my size! Also I tried to paste it in so you guys wouldn't have to go to the site...but I failed. Help?

@Zeuster, oooh the first one is amazeballs!  But now I'm wondering if a dress like that is appropiate for someone like me? Plus size and heavy on top.  How does the undergarments/support work with that?  I'm going to have to re-think my whole undergarments aren't I.  I love the second one too, especially the top. And the last one is devine.  Maybe I need to post a headless photo of me and then I can figure out my body type and go from there?

Before I saw you guys's replies I went searching on the Maggie S site, I saw the banner advert here.

What do you think of these?

Carolina ( but with a smaller train, I don't know if Im a trainy sort of person.

Bernadette (*swoon*, btw what do they mean by "Priority dress" on the Maggie site?)

Wow this is mega post, sorry about that.  I saw another dress that was a fit and flare I think and it was ruching and wasn;t lace, maybe satin?  I really need to learn my fabrics , Im going to search and see if I can find it for you guys opinions.

Thanks again!

Ahhhhh you can't go wrong with a Maggie always a beautiful choice I personally love the

Brownwyn. I think you need to try on some dresses and see you what makes you feel good. Cause if you feel good in it you will rock it no matter what. So go shopping and post the pictues on here. As for undergarments I believe there are so many different types and styles its hard to say what will work for you I think a lot of ladies have opted for the "natural" look because the dresses held them in.

I wish you luck. And if you need anymore help/advice we are here for you.

Most websites will let you right click on picture and you can paste it here.

I agree, I think the best course of action is for me to create a list of what I like, and maybe I can keep track of it here, and then I can try them on over the next couple of weeks.  Some people say ordering the dress takes 6-8 months...isn't that a bit long?

What do you guys think about Stella York...I saw her banner ad here on the site and clicked it.  Anyone have a dress by that label?

Style 5695

The back is gorg, the front is meh.

Style 5689

It's a little different than what I was looking at...but will might make me looked choked up b/c I'm so busty?

P.S.  I adore the Brownyn.  I'm just afraid that I like all the dresses and then they won't fit my body type and I'll be back on the drawing board, but I have to start somewhere so why not. :)

Good advice from everyone and as a plus size girl who was a 24 at the time of her wedding my dress was a 26 and it was a Alfred Angelo! Definitely try on lots of dresses. Different designers will run their sizes different however please dont get caught up in the size! It is madness that a size 20 would be a 28/30 in wedding gowns but if you focus on that youll never find a dress! Good luck honey! Sounds like you are off to a great start!
