Empty Calories.... How to deal with them?

Empty Calories are normally the soda and alcohol!! How do you quit?

--------------------------------------------------

I don't have an issue with drinking soda so much, I have maybe 2 a month... not a big deal... but the alcohol.... oh vey! Both of my jobs allow me to partake in happy hours, and its not good for the waistline!!!! GRRR....

I think b/c I blame beer for the reason for my 2 size increase.... this issue is a little touchy for me.

Am I an alcoholic?... no, I don't have to have a drink... But, I enjoy going out and being social with a cocktail!!

I thought by making the switch from my heavy belgium beers to gin and tonics, i.e. a lower calorie alcoholic beverage... it would help.... but nope!

I want to quit drinking for a decent period just to... well do it.. and see how much these empty calories really effect the size of my thighs!!!

I think one of the BIGGEST mistakes people make is drinking juice instead of soda even though juice has just as many calories as soda and counts as a serving of fruit for every 8 oz glass. You think you're being healthy, and it IS a healthier option but juice should be a snack not a refreshment.

jesandshan...I have some bad news for you. Gin and tonics have just as many calories as beer, if not more depending on how it's made.  Tonic water is a soda and is full of sugar. I know, I know! I made the EXACT SAME MISTAKE because I thought tonic "water" and almost had a conniption when I found out that it's not really water. LOL

The lowest calorie alcoholic beverage is clear liquors mixed with diet sodas, like a vodka and diet coke. I LOVE gin and diet sprite. Soda water is a good mixer too. A lot of bars put more than one shot in drinks, about 1.5 and sometimes more if you're cute. ;) So the calories just add up and up and up. I let it all out this weekend and drank 1200 calories in Amaretto Sour over the course of a couple hours. AHHH!

How do I quit? I hate bars. They're gross and make my hair stink like smoke and charge me insane prices for drinks I could make better myself. I like inviting friends over to my place for drinks, this way I'm 100% in control of how many calories are going into my drink and show off my skills of a bartender. ;) lol

I also have cut back on wine. DH and I love to have a bottle or two of wine with dinner on the weekends and that is a LOT of calories so we've decided to save the wine for once a month or, just have a glass with dinner instead of the whole bottle.

If I want to go out with friends, I only allow myself to drink as many calories as I burned in the gym that morning. Before we went out for cocktails Saturday night, I burned 900 calories at the gym (1.5 hr workout)....I did go one too many cocktails over my limit but at least it only put me 300 cals in the hole instead of 1200!

Its funny that you say that about tonic water.... I always have the diet tonic at my house, which they never seem to have at the bars.

See... I love bars... and most of them are smoke-free in Philly. Plus I'm a casual smoker... but thats saved for when I go to the cigar bar or a hookah lounge... lol! I try to avoid them too, but b/c I'm try to save money. But when I am out... I know that is when I drink the most...

Wine with dinner is a good point... I always feel that if we open it we have to finish it otherwise we will let it go bad... do you have a good bottle stop rec?

I hear you on the exercise front... well, work on that... lol

thanks

What has helped me is having a glass of water (sparkling if you like it) between drinks. You are on the right track with the lower cal options. A traditional Martini with gin is my choice when I do drink since there are no juices, sodas or sugary syrups added.

My problem is the wine. I looove it. FI and I have a glass every night with dinner. And alot more than one glass on the weekends! I know it's bad, but I just can't help it! It's my only vice :(.

Well, one glass of wine a day is good for you, especially if its red wine - it's said to be good for the heart (muscle, not the spiritual heart though I suspect it's good for that too!)  ;)

The glass of water between each drink is a GREAT tip b/c not only will it help you consume less calories but it will also help prevent getting too inebriated and will likely eliminate a hangover even if you do drink a lot of alcohol.

Someone recently posted a thread here about easy ways to lose 10lbs in a year and one of the suggestions is to have a wine spritzer instead of just a glass of wine - I think it said it reduces the calories by half.   Sounds like a good option to me if you can't give up that wine!  :)
