Etsy Invitations

Has anybody used Etsy for your invitations?  Our wedding is going to be small and not the ol traditional wedding.  We have gone with the camo theme.  I have been looking for months for an invitation and finally found one that i like on etsy.  I can either pay to have the template and wording sent to me and i print by myself or pay extra and have her print them.  Can somebody give me some pointers on if i print them myself? They would be getting done at Walgreens or something like that.  The inviations i like are 5 x 7 so would i have to use 8 1/2 x 11 then cut it out myself or is there paper out there that is already 5x7 that i haven't seen?   Any help or ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks.

First, welcome to Project Wedding and congratulations on your engagement!

I printed my own DIY invitations, and I think there are definitely advantages and disadvantages. How much is the Etsy seller charging if they print the invitations? You'll need to take all of your costs into consideration to be able to determine if you would save any money at all by printing your own.

You can cut down your own standard sized cardstock, but you have to be very careful to keep a straight edge. There are scrapbooking cutters that make that easier, but unless you already have one or can borrow one from a friend, you'll need to consider the cost of that tool when deciding what's the best option.

You'll also need to take the cost of printer ink into consideration. It can add up fast.

I used cardsandpockets.com for my paper, and they do offer an option for custom sized cardstock. You can get 5x7 cardstock from there for $.40/piece or less before shipping.

Let us know what you decide. I'd love to see the design you picked!

Hello and welcome to Project Wedding!!! I did not order my invitations from etsy.com, but I have ordered various things from etsy and have always been pleased. Yes there is cardstock paper at the size you want at various places. As far as printing, originally I was going to print my own invitations and ordered a sample invitation to try out. The sample was too thick to thick to use on my printer and then when I went to a printing place to get cost to have them do it, it came out cheaper me having them done by the place.

Laura's advice was really helpful and you do have to weigh some variables before making your final decision as far as cost. I can't wait to see what you decide to do!

Welcome to PW and CONGRATS!!

I work in a printshop as a graphic designer and do this sort of thing all the time. There is  5x7 paper, but its hard to find and limited in choice and can be expensive when you compair the cost of standard size paper and your home printer might not take that size...If your printing on standerd letter size paper you would set it 2 up (2 invitations on 1 paper) and cut it down, you need to add crop markes and a bleed (color that runs off the side making the image size larger then 5x7 before triming down) if there is color around the boarder. I would reccomend getting a nice card stock and taking it somewhere to have it professionaly printed and have them cut it down with their machines. Otherwise pay the extra $$ and have them do it, setting it up for print can be complecated if you dont know what your doing, and your going to shell out the cash anyway if you take it somewhere and have them set it up, print and cut for you. Hope this helps =)
