I'm sorry to say but I'm against the idea of using fish (or any animals) as decorations :( It is a bit cruel (sorry) because the fish you are talking about need heated water and are very tempramental so they need their environment to be perfect, or they will die. I think it is also a bit off putting as a guest to be looking at a dead fish while eating. Don't mean to offend, just my personal opinion and many animal rights groups are against this practice at weddings.

I think there was a post about this a couple of days ago, maybe you could look it up for more opinions. Also flowers can look just as nice.

I vote no on fish.  I like the concept of it - but I've seen too many kamikaze fish in my life - the last thing you need is something jumping out of its bowl and flocking around the table.  Even if something is topped with vegetation or flowers is no guarantee.  I had to scoop one off of the carpet with a spatula one time, what a nightmare.  Plus the whole fish poop thing - yuck.  I had a fish tank for years and years through college, and have had single betas as well - it's just a pain in the ass IMO.

Don't worry, we'll come up with something perfect!

My FI wanted camo too, I put the kibosh on that.  He gets a camo groom's cake.  One of his best friends had camo vests for the guys, and it really actually wasn't that bad under a black jacket - but I don't want that at mine.  Doesn't go with "the vision"  LOL!

Humm, good question. Well, I've never seen this at a wedding but it seems interesting. I honestly wouldn't mind eating with a fish swimming around. But let's just say it dies and if you have guests that are superstitious like me, It probably wouldn't be a good idea. I would probably veto the idea.

But it seems to me that you REALLY want your FI to feel like he's apart of the planning. Is there any other ideas that he has thought of?

No he really hasnt... except things like the camo, which I dont want in the ceramony. He is so excitd about it. I am letting him have camo ties and he can do whatever he wants with his groom table ( as long as there is no naked women on there!! lol I dont want Granny to have a heart attack! lol) So I dunno, my mom said that her friend used them and everything went smooth and was really pretty. I was thinking about looking into some other type of fish, one that is easier to take care of, but just as pretty that way after the wedding we can just put them all together in a tank.

I just feel stuck, My FI is just now starting to give ideas again. At the begining of planning he would give ideas that I really didnt like, so he just told me to do whatever since I didnt want any of his ideas...I felt really bad, but still couldn't see those in our wedding. Now he is giving ideas agian. This is OUR day not just mine, and I want him to be happy with everything. I feel like im being selfish...

I feel bad for the fish, I was at a reception with fish centerpieces and noone wanted to take them home and some died before the end of the reception so there were floating dead fish on the tables...just something to think about!!!

I like the idea of the fish centerpieces, I was at a wedding at a really fancy Chicago hotel and their centerpieces were tall champagne flutes filled with water, floating flowers and floating candles and inside the water were two bright pink fish. They were not beta fish, the bride called them "tropical kissing fish" and they really did kiss (or so it seemed). They would be swimming around and then all of a sudden they would go up to each other and it looked like they kissed each other on their little fishy lips. People raved about them, and everyone wanted to take them home at the end of the night. I think the bride said she got them a day or two before, and there were no dead fish at the end of the night.

Just a thought, it could work.

That sounds so cute soontobeahug.

I've contemplated this idea for my wedding while I was still planning and ruled it out - mainly because I could just imagine some of the guests getting too drunk and mistaking a fishbowl for their drink! Or, you know those guys and their silly dares "i'll bet you wont eat it!". If you do go with some sort of fish centerpiece - look into the fish that are known to live longer, for example: goldfish almost always die as soon as you get them home! I do have a beta fish that I've had for over a year and I admit, I do forget to feed it sometimes and change it's water (my mom has him now because I knew I wasn't very good at taking care of it!) but he's still alive and kicking! He's tried to commit suicide a few times (jumping out of the fishbowl cuz the water was too high) but he's a trooper!

I'm with the gals here too, no to the betta fish.  They may survive the night (they are hardy and don't require a lot of specifics as far as water, temp, etc) however, finding homes for them may be difficult and like everyone said, if one would die, it wouldn't be a pretty centerpiece anymore.. :(

sounds cute but i completely agree with hayley.  lets say you have ten centerpieces, thats 10 people that you would have to find to take them home. thats a lot to take responsibility for little fishy lives and a big responsibility for you to make sure they go to good homes. i wouldnt want to think about all that on my wedding day.

i have to throw my 2 cents in and say i wouldn't do it.  i think it's cruel to the fish.

if i were a guest and was sitting at a table with a fish centerpiece, i would feel guilty eating my dinner.  especially if you had a fish entree!

Well I have been talking to my wedding party,my mom and grandmother, they both have beta fish and said that they would take any leftovers and place them around their homes. Also my FMIL said she would like to have one. So I think we are going to try it out on a moch one here at the house.

Also we cut the number of main centerpieces in half, and were considering the kissing fish, so... I appriciate everyones input, and maybe I just dont see things quite the same way as many of yall which is perfectly fine, I really want to add my FI requests, it matches his personality...he LOVES to fish and the outdoors, so it seems reasonable. Were not having fish on the menu, it is more of a pot luck, home cooked menu...we live in the south so, everyone has their something special they make really well!

I also was thinkning about putting little place cards by the fish that say "Please Take Me Home!" or something like that and saving the containers the fish came in, so it would be easy to give them as gifts.

I aslo do not mind taking a few home, I think they are very pertty. I guess I just dont see how it is cruel to the fish, I'm just letting them swim around and admired for their beauty!

But thaks again for everyones input, I hope not to offend anyone, just sharing ideas here!

I think the idea is very unique! It could get very expensive and hard to take all the fish to the site and get them ready and make sure they are all alive before the reception. Too me that sounds like bunches of work.. But if you want that then you should try. Or.. you could have centerpeices like the one below that have a fish or ocean feel.. and then at your cake table... or seating table have a larger decorated fish tank with the fish swimming around! :] It would tie the atmosphere together and that way if a fish died it wouldn't be sitting with 10 people looking at it! :]

Hope this helps! Don't give up! :] Your ideas are good... just making them work can get tricky at times!

I think the idea photo 101567-1I think the idea photo 101567-2I think the idea photo 101567-3I think the idea photo 101567-4The arch fish tank would be one hell of an entrance! But I am sure its a bit expensive! haha

Hope these Ideas help! :]

thats great that you found homes for them. yo'ure being responsible and i guess thats all that anyone asks for the sake of the fishies. so it may just work! maybe alternating half flowers and half fish? i'm sure whatever you decide you'll be fine since you already have people willing to give them a nice home afterwards.

Alls I can say is - Do what you want!! It is your wedding - not ours or anyone elses (except your FI!). If it is something you really want - I say go for it. Just remember though, keep those bettas separate!

Mine goes nuts if it even sees it's reflection (we like to mess with it and put a mirror in front of its bowl), they're fighting fish - so only one per container!
