Flea medicine?

We give Murphy Comfortis (pill form of flea control) and started giving it to Oscar since we live in FL and the summer months are awful with fleas :(

My question is I gave it to the boys last night, Oscar had no problems but Murphy got sick about an hour later.  I went online and there is pretty much awful reviews on all flea stuff - what do you guys use?  I liked the pill since we bath Murphy alot in the summer since he likes to roll in dirty and the tropical stuff washes off but if makes him sick I don't want to give it to him again :(

Sorry, I'm no help since we use Comfortis also.  We used Frontline before and I don't recommend it, it didn't work.  My friend uses a combined heartworm/flea pill but I don't know the name of it...you might ask your vet?

Yea - that is why we started using the Comfortis.  He doesn't always get sick, I wonder if it's because he won't eat the pill and we make him swallow it whole?

Our little fatty Oscar inhaled it with his food lol.  Do you give it to your pup on a full stomach?  We always do since our vet said to but I read last night on a website to give it on an empty stomach?

Stew hates it.  We have to give it to him whole and basically push it down his throat.  It's usually after we try to get him to eat it in his food though, so he usually has eaten.

I don't like the comfortis because it only kills fleas. We use k9 advantix because it kills fleas ticks lice and mosquitos. Its a topical that you place in between the shoulder blades and its water proof. Id definitely recommend it!

I think we have mutant fleas in our yard. Izzy gets Comfortis AND Frontline Plus, and she still gets some fleas. We've also tried combining the Comfortis with K9 Advantix - same result :(

We've decided this year to get the yard sprayed. I didn't want to do it b/c I felt like it was introducing more chemicals to our yard (and my vegetable garden), which could be harmful to us or our animals; but I can't let Izzy scratch and be uncomfortable once summer rolls around. I hate fleas!

We use Revolution...it's a topical medication that kills everything - fleas, ticks, heartworm, all the nasties :)

We use Frontline...no problems/fleas/ticks....we give separate heartworm and flea/tick meds....we heard sometimes the heartworm med isn't as effective...and I'd "rather" them get fleas and NOT heartworm...the treatment for that is terrible!!!

I'm a fan of Frontline(takes care of fleas and ticks), Advantage(only fleas), Advantix(fleas, ticks, and repels mosquitoes) and now there is a new one called Vectra out which also does fleas, ticks and mosqitoes....only downside to Advantix is if you have kitties that get along well with your pups, Advantix can be toxic to cats...if you're having trouble with one product or another it IS possible that the fleas in your area have built up an immunity to whichever product you are using...so I'd suggest switching to another product and see if that helps.  I'm really not a fan of most of the oral "all in one" kinda deals cuz they don't do a great job at getting all the life stages of the flea...i like all topical flea/tick meds better....as for heartworm protection i like heartgard best... its an oral chewable that ya give once a month...totally easy :) On another note...my parents have their yard sprayed for ants/etc and the dog is on NO flea/tick meds....we're in so cal so that may not work for all you ladies but it will DEFINITELY help for those of you that have a big parasite prob :) HTH! :)

I live in FL and the fleas are AWFUL in the summer.  I like keeping the heartworm medicine and flea stuff separate because like jackie says heartworm treatment is awful and I feel better knowing they have correct dosing and it doesn't wash off.  I like heartguard the best too :)

I also live in Florida and used to give my dog Revolution which worked fine and you could bath them within an hour of using it on them. My problem was that my roommate at the time didn't treat his dog so mine kept getting bitten because fleas were always in the house, Yuk!!! So when I moved out my friend who is a vet-tech started getting me Comfortis because she gets it a cost so it is way cheaper than what I was spending on Revolution.

princess it's not uncommon for dogs to throw up the first few doses of comfortis. If he throws it up within an hour give him another pill but if it's longer than an hour he should be ok and have enough medicine in his system to be effective. Talk to our vet about it but that's what we always forewarned owners about when they bought comfortis. I love comforits and that's what my dogs got when we lived in floria where there isn't a huge tick problem but now that we live in the northeast where there's a major tick problem we give them advatage multi and supplement them with vectra when we go up to visit the in-laws who live in the country.

Thanks Hurley!  It's weird because sometimes he gets sick and sometimes he doesn't?  And we have been giving it to Murphy since he was 14 weeks old (he is almost 2)  I felt so bad that he got sick :(
