Florals for church

now that i'm done planning our 2008 wedding (all we have to do is fly to hawaii get the marriage license and get hitched), i'm shifting my focus on the 2009 church wedding...

the church allows silk flowers as pew decor, but only real flower arrangements are allowed at the altar...

anyhoo - i was thinkin pomander balls isntead of tulle or swags of fabric and ribbon...

here's mock - next one i'll try will be all silk carnations . i think this one is too busy with all the different kinds of flowers...

i'll post the all-carnation one when i'm done...

Actually, I think this one you made is lovely. It's pretty mix of colors. If they will be hanging at the edge of pews, the'll look great. I can't wait to see how the all carnation one turns out.

The looooove the one you made, the colors look good together. I'm doing pomander balls as aisle decorations for my ceremony also, but I haven't decided what type of flower I'm going to use. I love how it looks w/roses, but that would be too expensive. I've seen some nice ones w/carnations and hydrangeas. I may need to hire you to make mine!!! :)

Let me preface this by saying it will take a TON of flowers to do these. I literally used 35-50 stems on each ball. I used varying sizes and shades of my wedding accent colors (white, lime green, hot pink, baby pink) to give the ball more dimension. All stems were medium quality - it would have cost a small fortune to use super high qualitysilk flowers.

Supplies needed.. glue gun.. low temp, glue and melting pot (you can buy at michael's or richard's or any other craft store really) styrofoam balls (I recommend the green ones) wire cutters, floral stems, ribbon, and a few straight pins (I used the ones with pearl tops).

Things to keep in mind: when selecting the size of your foam ball, remember it will be much larger once all the flowers are in place.

Prep Work: Cut all the flower stems and leaves off. Keep 2 inches to press into stryofoam ball.

If you are using differnt sizes of flowers, first start by placing the largest "flowers" on the ball first. Dip the stem into the glue melting pot making sure to cover the stem and bottom of flower. Fill in with the medium size roses and then the small flowers to complete your pomander ball.

since i used same size carnations on my 2nd pomander, i just went for it at random...

To attached the ribbon, hot glue the bottom of the ribbon into the top of the ball inbetween the roses where it can be completely hidden. To ensure it holds properly, use straight pins to secure to ball.

ALSO: if you dont want to use glue, you'll need green floral tape and those little wooden sticks... cut the stems as usual and wrap the stick to the stem with the floral tape - pointy side goes into the styrofoam ball...

p.s. if the glue is too hot - it may deform the styrofoam - i found this out by "accident"

depends on the flowers you use...and where you get them...when dirty was still toing with the idea she found an ebay seller for cheap slik flowers

I went to Hobby Lobby and got the bunches of red carnations orginally 5.99 but when they have 50 percent off florals its 2.50.

Also it debends on the ball size - i used 2 inch balls or something smaller than dirty on my second go round...it tool almost 3 bunches of floers per ball - so all in alla bout 8.00 a pom.
