For those that Cloth Diaper....

How did you decide what to use?  Did you go somewhere to touch and see how they all worked?  Or did you just read a ton and pick a style?

My head is spinning and I'm really a very visual person, but I have no idea where to go to get my hands on the different kinds - it seems they are all purchased online?

TIA!

I read a lot and watched youtube videos on cloth diapering. One of the blogs I read said cloth diaper shopping is like car shopping. There are so many makes/models so just pick one and try it out, or purchase a variety to try to find what works best for you and babe.

Here are some helpful links I found - get ready for link over load but I promise it's great info and or online stores! A great place to get your stash started is zulily :)

Also, I created a board on pinterest for cloth dipes. I haven't read everything I've pinned yet but it might be useful.

PS: DH and I decided to start CD'ing after LO is past the newborn stage. We didn't want to invest in newborn size dipes that 1. she'll grow out of in a month or two, and 2. I keep hearing that they go through a TON of diapers when they're newborns.

Thank you!

Yeah, we are going to wait until after the newborn stage, too.  Besides, I'd hate to get a bunch of newborn CD and end up with a 10 lb baby as my DH is threatening that this baby will be LOL

ditto on using BabyCenter cloth diaper forum for info!  I got all my knowledge from that group (and no mama drama there too!).

I'm with MNM, prefolds and covers are the way to go if you don't want to worry about sizing, drying and cost.  It is an added step but not a steep learning curve.  I also wanted only natural fibers on baby's bum so I stuck with bamboo prefolds from Nicki's Diapers and I got a few from Green Mountain Diapers as well.  I registered from some Thirsties covers on Amazon and got a few more from the R&R coop on Facebook.

But I did want to try some AIOs for DH and other caretakers so based on an old PWers' recommendation, I got Kawaiis.  They seemed like quality but inexpensive AIOs with bamboo styles.  I have yet to try it since we're loving the prefolds and covers.

Unfortunately, everything was online.  I was only able to see BumGenius at BBB but nothing else.  So I basically went by reviews on the BC forum.

I highly suggest not investing on too many AIOs if that's what you are interested in since they are so expensive and finding the right fit is based on trial and error. There are rental options out there.  Def check out Nicki's Diapers and Kelly's Closet.

My DH found this series on youtube and I think it helped a ton!

I agree on no AIOs, especially after seeing the videos.  I am leaning toward the pre-folds and covers.  But I will admit I liked the BumGenius pocket diapers after seeing these videos - but then there is the cost. =/

Odds on actually getting things we register for since we are gonna be Team Green?

I watched that same series and also found it very helpful.  But try the pocket diapers if you want!  Invest in one or two and see how you like it.  You may end up thinking that the extra cost is worth the "disposable" convenience.

As for registering for it, you may be surprised.  I was sure no one was was going to get us any cloth diaper accessories but was surprised.

I too watched that video series and thought it was helpful! :) I forgot about those when I was posting. Doh!

We are going the pocket route as well because I wanted something easier and AIO's seem like more laundry which won't do me any good! LOL

Pockets may actually be a little more laundry work than AIOs. The problem w AIOs is the drying time. With pocket diapers, you can take the absorbent inserts out of the diaper for faster drying but once dried you have the added step of stuffing the inserts back into the pocket diaper.

True, but I can stick DH on the stuffing detail! haha

The reason I think the AIO's would be more laundry is because you need more of them. With the pockets, if it's just a wet diaper, you pull the wet insert out, insert a new one and babe can re-wear that dipe. AIO's, wet or soiled - you change the whole thing.

I bought a few kawaii pockets to test them out.  The outer pocket, or the piece that touches baby, can be moisture wicking but I wasn't sure if the whole diaper would be dry enough to reuse.  We shall see.
