Free offers??

Alright guys, I know you can help me out!!

FI and I got a quote from a cake maker before we moved our wedding due to our deployment. When we asked to move the date and told him why, we said he would make the cake for free for us since we're "serving our country"

We thought it was such a nice offer, and accepted. We are on an incredibly small budget. (8k) However, now he's offering to serve as a backup photographer for free. He wants to get back into photographing weddings, and this would help build his portfolio. Yet again, such a great offer.

We accepted the cake, but I would feel odd accepting the back up photographer part too. I was thinking we'd at least offer to pay him for his time?

Good idea/bad idea?

How much would be a reasonable offer? I don't want to offend him with a crap offer, but we didn't budget a 2nd photographer??

Help!!

accept - i'm slowly easing my way into wedding plnning and am doing it for free too, so i can see his offer being legit and heartfelt... but maybe ask him if you can pay a small fee??  of course - feed him (which is standard i believe) and if he doesnt want to "take your money"  maybe buy him a $100 gas card at shell or chevron for his time and energy and another gc at a local photog place so maybe he can get some new equip or accessories??

that's a helluva offer!!

Offer him a tip.. As big or small as your budget allows... I would love to know how his cake tastes.. Sounds like a nice guy.

I agree with Dirty... Get him a GC to show your appreciation... it works for both of you... you get more photos taken at your wedding and he gets to build his portfolio- it works out for both of you :)
