Gatlinburg ideas?

My fiance and I just booked a cabin in Gatlinburg for our honeymoon. :) Since he has lived in Panama City, Florida for his whole life a beach type honeymoon destination wouldn't really seem different and out of the ordinary. :) So we are excited about staying in a cabin in the mountains and maybe we will even see a little snow. :)

The honeymoon will be from Dec. 19th-24th and then we are heading back home to spend time with family for Christmas. Any ideas about attractions or fun things to do in Gatlinburg or places nearby? I've never been to this part of Tennesse before so I'm not sure what is around there that could be fun.

Thanks!

Ah, there is the Great Smoky Mountains.  Been there and absolutely love it.  I'm unsure about going in the winter time, you'll probably won't see as many black bears.  But there are some great hiking trails to isolated waterfalls and grottos and even some driving trails.  I'll have to dig up my notes from my virtualtourist.com account.  I do NOT recommend Dollywood, though I actually like Dolly Parton.

Oh and where are you staying?  I think we stayed at a Westgate resort, which was nice but a slight drive to the mountains.

Dorkmeetsnerd: I definitely want to go to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park! I'm really looking forward to that. We are staying in a little cabin that is part of Mountain Laurel Chalets. The name of the one we are renting is "Sugar Booger" which I think is *totallly* cheesy, and my FI thinks it's funny. When he started reading the description and it mentioned that the owners decorate this cabin for Christmas he was hooked! Here's the link in case you want to take a peak:

nika00- I like the way you are thinking! I'll have to find out where the outlets are....we may have some extra cash on our hands from wedding gifts? :) Of course, there is the fence that needs to be fixed back at home, but who wants to think about that when outlets are nearby? :)

Go to Cades Cove, and a restaurant called The Park, and you could even drive over the Asheville, NC to see the Biltmore!

i actually got married up there 2 weekends ago on may 30 and did our honeymoon up there. my husband and i also went back in october. it is beautiful. the tanger outlets malls are great, and there are 3 of them all spaced a couple stop lights apart. and one thing you will notice if you don't already know is that everything is mentioned by what stop light is at...if you want a nice resturant for dinner i would say the peddler and i think it is at stop light 11...great food and service...we stayed in the heart of gatlinburg at sight 6, so we could walk down there instead of driving and paying for parking space..also you should take a drive up throuh cade's cove, i can't recall the name of the road that you take, but its in pigeon forge...its a beautiful place and are ready for our trips this fall up there..if there is anything else you want to know i can try and help!!!

Definietly visit pikes peak and Clingmans Dome if you have the time to hike a bit and see some gorgeous scenery.  Also if you ask one of the park rangers, they have a brochure to some of the waterfalls throughout the park and surrounding areas. Its a great way to get out in the wild and see some beautiful nature!

I'd stay away from Cherokee... alot of supposedly native american stuff that really is just junk made in china. However, there is one shop, also with a native american museum, that has genuine stuff. If your up for a bit of a drive (about 2 hours) Franklin NC has ruby mining. They give you a bucket of dirt and show you how to pick out rubies and sapphires. There's also a cute gem museum in the town of franklin (in an old jail house... the old guy in there who gives tours is adorable and so informative. He can give you all sorts of tips on where to go for authentic mines and real rubies... not the fake "seeded" ones.

If you and your FI are the adventurous type there are kayaking and white water rafting trips through the Nantahala Gorge we booked a 1/2 day Kayak trip and it was super fun. We went through the outdoor center. (www.noc.com.)

DON'T bother with Dollywood or Pigeon Forge... unless your into the touristy crap. :)

Edit: Oh and AMiller brought up another AMAZING one. If you don't mind the drive, the Biltmore is gorgeous!
