Gianna's Birth Story
Gianna Elle, July 31, 2012, 12:45 PM, 7 lbs 6 oz, 20 inches
I was set to be induced on 7/31/12 at 8:00 PM to give birth on 8/1/12 when my doctor was on call since I hit 41 weeks. Being induced was one of the last things I wanted, but at 41 weeks being 50% effaced and 1 cm dilated it didn't seem like she was going to come on her own, especially since at 40 weeks I was 50% effaced and a fingertip dilated. However, Gianna had different plans. On 7/30/12 we went to bed around 10 PM. I woke up at 12:35 AM and felt wet, but not soaked. I put on a pad and woke DH up to let him know what was going on. A few minutes later I checked the pad and it was the bloody show. I called the on-call doctor and she said to come in so they could check if my water had broke since I was GBS positive and would need the penicillin soon if the water did break. DH and I got ready and left. When we were leaving I was having cramping, but nothing too bad. In the car ride to the hospital the cramping got worse and was coming in waves so I started to time them since I figured they were contractions. They were about a minute long and came about every 5-8 minutes. We got to the hospital and were in a monitoring area around 3:30 AM. I was having contractions and my water did break. I was about 2 cm at that time. They got my room ready (they were very busy and had to wait for a room) and then the real contractions started and kept getting worse. All the nurses and doctors said I would deliver that night or even on the first. Around 10:15 AM the contractions were extreemly painful and right on top of each other. DH said I was like King Kong shaking the bed when I was having the contractions. I decided to get the epidural since I could not continue with the pain for another half day. It was pretty much instantly that the anesthesiologist team came in and gave me a combined spinal so I could have relief instantly. I had 2 more contractions that weren't bad and then I felt nothing after. After the epidural they checked my progress and learned I was 7cm and the reason I was in so much pain is because I was progressing so quickly. They weren't checking me since I was GBS positive, but I think if I knew I was already at 7cm I would have declined the epidural and pushed through it as planned. Shortly after I was having a lot of pressure, but no need to push. The pressure was really painful and the epidural didn't seem to have an affect so DH called in the nurse. She checked me and she said it was time to push. The on call doctor was in another delivery and his cover was also busy, so I had the third covering doctor with all the nurses come in pretty much instantly. I pushed for 8 minutes and Gianna Elle came into the world at 12:45 PM. I had second degree tears, which apparently is "not bad" according to the doctor since she came so quick and I didn't have much of a chance to stretch. However, I think it is bad! They placed her on my chest and she was so perfect. Just thinking about it makes me tear up. It is the most magical moment in my life and I couldn't ask for a more perfect baby.
