Going back to school

A little history on me; I graduated high school, and immediately started college for Nursing. I only finished one semester before dropping out, it honestly wasn't what I wanted to do, it's what my parents wanted me to do.

It's been over three years now and I have been considering going back for the last year. I was going to back for nursing and become a pediatric nurse, because I really want to work with children. The real reason behind nursing for me, was the money thought... so obviously that's not where my passion lies.

After fighting with myself for months, I have decided to go back for Elementary Education and become a teacher. What better way to fulfill my dream of working with children, than teaching them!? (I quit my 45 hour/week management job last week for something part time and more flexible). Of course, we all the pay is substantially less than a nurse, or any other field for that matter. But at the end of the day, I took the money out of the equation, and teaching is what I wanted...

I'm incredibly nervous, yet excited, to go back to school. I filled out my application and I have been re-admitted. I will start in January 2011. I will attend a community college for 4 semesters, then transfer to the local university for the last two years. I hope to be finished and have my Bachelors and teaching license by Summer of 2014. I'm going to take classes through the summer as well.

This fall, I am going to get in some Volunteer work with the Boys and Girls club, and CASA (A kid's place) which helps abused, neglected, and abandoned children find foster homes.

Overall I am way excited about what the future holds, my husband is so supportive of this as well, he's going to be my rock through it all :)

congrats! yay for teachers! i made a similar decision recently to switch careers and become a teacher. i have an undergrad degree in psychology so now i'm working on a masters degree (dual concentration in early childhood and elementary education). i just started the program this summer and am loving it so far!!! i can't wait to start student teaching in the fall.

it's taken a bit of adjustment to get back into academic mode, writing papers, etc, but i'd been out of school for a long time... you'll probably have no problem getting back into the swing of things.

it's great that your hubs is so supportive! it definitely makes things easier. best of luck!!! i'm sure you'll do great!!!

Sounds like you know what you want and you are going for it. It will pay off in the end when you know you did what you wanted and didn't let anyone influence your decision.

Good luck!
