I didn't shop for a gown the traditional way, but I did go with my BFF when I was her MOH a few years ago. She's a size 18 and she was a little nervous too. We went to a few different bridal salons and they really didn't have many plus-sized gowns. The few plus-sized gowns they did have were ugly and very matronly-looking.

Thankfully, the ladies who were helping us were awesome and helped us get a good idea on how the gown would look in her size. They'd put the gown on, and instead of trying to zip it up, they'd just clip it to the strapless bra she had on. They really made the experience a happy one and not one filled with body-image issues. ;-)

From what I've read, it's kind of hit or miss on getting friendly service at a bridal salon. My advice would be to go to many. And if you get a bitchy sales rep, go back another time and get someone else. I know it's not easy to do, but a lot of brides have had better luck with customer service when they've gone on weekdays.

Good luck!

Oh yeah... take your time deciding on a gown. Not everyone has that moment where the skies open up and a choir of angels begin singing when you've put on the perfect gown. And don't feel like you have to buy one on your first visit.

Once you've found your perfect gown, shop around and see if other bridal shops have it for a cheaper price. Contrary to what a shop will say, you don't have to get your alterations with them either, often time, they're more expensive there. Shop around.

Then, don't feel pressured to buy your veil, shoes, jewelry, etc from the same bridal shop. A friend of mine was bombarded with pressure from one shop owner to buy her accessories there, it was really annoying.

Have a wonderful time!

I was in your place a few months ago. I eased myself in by first going to a shop where I was pretty sure that the samples would fit. At most of the other shops I had to work with the sales assistants to strap me in and visualise what the dresses would look like i they were actually in my size. The assistants are pretty experienced in this and so it wasn't nearly as awkward as I was expecting.

Try not to stress too much. If you think about it, the sample sizes fit such a small number of people (they are too big for some/too small for others) so the assistants really are used to working with brides and getting the samples to fit as best they can.

try on anything that catches your eye...whether it fits or not...i think wedding gowns are one of those things that look WAY different on you than they do on the rack!!  Have fun!!  (and be prepared to sweat....i was soooo hot, you will probably have on a longline bra, and crinoline too!)

I too was SUPER nervous I'm about a 16/18 and put off shopping for a while. I too was not excited at all, but after a giant shove from the PW ladies I finally started going. I have not settled on a dress and have visited 4 different shops so far. i just don't feel like I have found the best choice yet.

Anyway, a place like David's is bound to have more options to actually try on in your actual size, but many other stores have had some that were beautiful too. I am larger in the butt/hip area, so I was able to get many size 8/10 floor samples on and just clip and hold in the back. You can kind of get an idea what it will look like.

Don't worry too much though. Just take the plunge and start looking. I have not met any snooty sales people yet. I also recommend going on a weekday. Personally, i plan not to step in a bridal shop on a weekend if I don't have to.

I wasn't able to go on a weekday, but I still had lovely service, so if you can't make a weekday, it should still be okay.  I think as long as you make an appointment you should be fine.  Where are you located?  If you're in the LA/OC area, I highly recommend La Soie and Mariposa Boutique.  The salespeople were super nice there and very accommodating.  Like the others have said, I think they are used to dealing with brides of every size and shape, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.  I was a little nervous at first about having a complete stranger dress me, but they weren't fazed at all.  Just concentrate on finding the perfect dress! :)  Good Luck!

not sure about the crinoline but i think a longline bra is maybe like a body suit with a build in bra? i actually went out and bought a good strapless bra for trying on dresses and then most of the shops suggested that i try the dresses on without a bra so i could see what the bust support was like.
