Groom's Cakes??

How many of you are thinking of having a groom's cake? How many people is it supposed to serve? 25% of the guests?

We're getting married in the South and I was informed that it was a southern tradition... FI liked the idea although I'm not really partial one way or another. I'm just slightly worried because we're having a smaller wedding so if I have a huge groom's cake, what if no one wants any wedding cake??

yes i'm surprising him with a mini-replica of yankees stadium

i have a bunch of kids, foodies and sugar-addicts on the gueslist - no doubt the cake will be gone - if not, maybe the waitstaff will want a slice??   this is what we did at fh's b-day dinner last year - i got him a "nacho libre" bday cake - and there were only 6 of us at dinner - soooo fh boldly went to everyone at the restaurant adn offered them a slice... still had 1/4 cake left - and the waitstaff actually askd for it instead of us throwing it away...

could you get a small groom's cake???

we're having a small one too...round (flat) with red baseball seams and SF Giants logo in center

figure we can devour it in the room, if no one eats it at the reception!

i'm going to have one for sure. i love dirty's idea. i may just get him a NY Yankee's Logo on it. Just the NY but in 3D if that makes sense. FI's a verrrrrrrrrrrrry proud NYorker. I dont know about the size but I'll probably get a small one. Its not really meant to feed everyone. Just more of a novelty.

Really creative ideas ladies! May I ask how many people your groom's cake is serving versus how many total?

My baker wants me to order a wedding cake that covers 110% of the guests then a grooms cake that covers another 50%... it just seems like a ton of cake!

since mine will just be for the rehearsal dinner, it will feed all 30 people...probably more since i don't want it too small.  i would imagine for a wedding, you wouldn't need it to feed all that many people since theoretically the wedding cake will be enough for everyone.  it's more symbolic, isn't it?  so maybe 25%??

my baker makes a 3layer cake that feeds 100, then backs it up with sheet cake that feeds 50...i wouldn't let her strong-arm you into getting more than 100% of your guests covered...you probably won't even need that much...there's alway soooo much cake left over....

We are doing one at our local dinner reception after the DW. We expect 40 guests and this will be the dessert so we will get a cake for 40 people. FI went to UT so he's a Longhorn, the cake will be a Longhorn  :)

We are doing a cake mostly for looks my FIs is that type of person who wants to know how something works and alot of the time it doesn't after he is done with it. So we are getting an anvil that is broken into pieces. I also live in the south and most people here want a piece of both since one is vanilla and the other is chocolate. So I am haveing it feed 75% of the guest. Another plus is that most of our guest are out of town so the next day we are all meeting for luch and I am bring all the left over cake for them to take home!
