Hair Trial + day of is becoming a headache!

howdy ladies!

so the last major thing i have to book is my hair stylist. currently i dont have one so i'm basically searching and asking for recommendations from friends. I found a couple but the prices are insane!

i want a soft, "messyish", fishtail braid with extensions. As i gather cost of extensions and trials, its putting me over $500 which I think is a lot! 1 lady price is close to $900 and that includes extensions, trial, and day of. Still insane!

My plan now is not to mention that its a wedding...get the hairstyle done just as I want or at least close to it, so the cost wouldn't be wedding related. then if we mesh well and they do a great job, then i'll ask about the day of.

Doing consultations just for a hair style is much cheaper but now I'm worried if I go that route and inquire abt their availability for the wedding, then its a possiblility that they wont be avail.

I went to 2 consultations thus far not mentioning wedding and the cost for the service would be $100, but once you say wedding, that jumps to $275 not including traveling.

the second consult - we really vibed well. i want him to do my hair! he told me prices of extension, which are expensive and it i added up the #'s, it can run up to about $520. so b/c i already know he can do what i want and the appt was great, i'm thinking about asking abt his services for the day of and forgetting abt the "trial" to cut cost. if i estimate his travel cost, that could easily put me to $600, which again sounds like a lot for a damn braid, but I can probably swing it!

I'd be willing to maybe do $500 incl extensions, day of, and travel cost...trial would be ideal but that isn't realistic.

I see the importance of trial for me and the stylist but man o man, i totally dont want to dish out that kind of money!

I dont know what to do....its getting down to the wire and I want to be done with this!

Ideas, thoughts? Help!

i think one thing to remember is that the extensions you will have for a long time.  yes, you may be getting them done to fit the vision you have for your wedding, but they will be around for awhile afterwards.  so if you take the cost of the extensions out of the "wedding" related costs, then does everything else fit into your budget.  if you colored your hair on a regular basis you would want to make sure the color was right for the wedding and wouldn't think of making that apt a wedding cost.

i hear what you are saying krosa reg the extensions....

the cost is still more than what I'd like to pay...but it seems i may have to bite the bullet. i'm going to make maybe 2 more appts and hear cost and go from there. this is extremely difficult for me to pay close to $900 just for hair. i could totally justify a pair of shoes for $600 but i just can't for hair.

thanks for your input krosa!

Have you looked at buying your extensions yourself? I know sometimes you can find them on line for way cheaper...ive used a new kind that are "tape in" extensions and they were awsome and very well priced! Would that be a way you could save money or not really possible?

yea. that's the only option...all stylist i went to dont have extensions...they had recommendations.

i'd love to order online but prefer to feel the texture to make sure it will mesh well w/ my hair.

so all of the stylist i went to thus far are all in the NYC area. I decided to search for a stylist close to my venue to lessen the travel fee. I found a couple and will have a trial b/c its MUCH cheaper than what these ppl were charging me. I still have to buy extensions but at least i can re use and the cost to the service is waaaaay cheaper than what the others are charging! Whew!

I dont have a car so I'll just ask my MOH to take me as its about an 1.30m away from my home.

Oh man, that does sound like a lot! I don't have many other suggestions besides what the ladies have mentioned...ovbiously you want it done right...but dang! Not for what you would normally pay for a dress! The only other thing I can think of, not sure how it is in NYC, but beauty schools...are muuuuch cheaper and the stylists are usually really good! Maybe contact a beautify school!
