HELP: Caramel Apple Recipe

Hi girls!! I was wondering if any of you had a good caramel apple recipe. I tried making them for a girl who is turning 15 and ended up having to cover them with chocolate (in my opinion a lot better) but the caramel I made was super runny and would not stay on the apples! it was so messy and frustrating. I tried dipping them in boiling water so the wax would come off the apples but didn't work. This is what I used (brown sugar (2 cups)  butter (half os tick), condensed milk (1 can)...am I missing something?

We used to buy a bag of Kraft caramels and my mom just put them in the double boiler to heat up and melt.  I don't remember adding anything to them.  Maybe it says on the bag?
