Help me Design my Engagement Dress! (And apologies for life story!)

Right. So I'm not officially engaged... in fact, I'm temporarily living in a small village on the other side of the world to other half. However, he mentioned something about our house party planned for my holiday back home in Feb being an engagement party (which he deinied when I picked up on it). Also, he keeps saying "well, we would be married by now if you hadn't gone off to live on the other side of the world". He also said he was thinking of getting me a ring in September, when I had my last holiday. I decided to test him the other night when he was talking about a friend's engagement ring over Skype (to mock me, I think, as he knows I want to get married... grrrr...). I grabbed the opportunity to say "well, when the time comes, you know what I like... platinum or white gold with a square solitaire". Then he went silent for a second before delivering a witty comeback. Now, I always say I like silver. And he always buys me gold... either because he forgets or because he prefers it (or both). I don't feel I can complain as he has very nice taste in jewellery (although I really don't like gold) and I always thank him profusely for the nice gifts.... but I just knew that if he already had a ring, it would be in gold, despite the catalogues I tried to leave hanging around the house before I left (subtle, moi? Well look, it has been 7 years, so I'm not a total bunny boiler). So I think that slight silence was an "err.... whoops" moment from him.

With that in mind, I have continued my obsessive looking online for wedding dresses, which started when he used the word "engagement" to describe our party. But then a thought occurred. If I get engaged next month, I will need a dress for my engagement shoot. I cannot buy the dress in Feb, or during my next holiday in July, as I will have no time. I will also be super busy when I return for good this autumn. However, if I already had the dress within a few days of my return, then I could have time to do a shoot with the two families, and maybe a trash the dress style shoot in the country near my house (to be used as 'teaser' pics for wedding invites etc... I have a few friends in mind who are really good photographers, and it would be so much fun!). Then the shoot wouldn't be a hassle. Also, after spending the past year in muddy linen trousers and shapeless tops, I would love to be able to wear something nice. I've never owned anything nice or expensive looking that wasn't second-hand. Plus, if I don't get engaged, I can either save it or dye it another colour, right? It would also give me the chance to test DressilyMe and see what the quality is like in case I want to get a wedding dress from there. But I would need to order very soon. So with that in mind...

Right So I m photo 3256101-1 I would like this top. But which skirt to go with it? Bear in mind that this will be a short dress... around knee length or just below. Should I go for:

1. Classic, clean lines. This will look good, but... I only get to do this once, right? So what about something more fancy. It's still a favourite though. Plus I could wear it again... many times.

Right So I m photo 3256101-2

2. This sort of rugged look will be great for the trash the dress style shoot... but would it look a little strange if it were only knee length (image has been cropped to show you what it would look like)? I like this one, too.

Right So I m photo 3256101-3

3. Another safe option. But would it look a bit strange with that top? Plus, if I was going to play it safe I might prefer option 1.

Right So I m photo 3256101-4

4.The actual skirt which goes with that top. Nice enough, but meh.

Right So I m photo 3256101-5

5.Something totally crazy, like this, but altered a bit to be less mental? Would that even work? How would you do it? I think this is far too "bridal". Just putting the idea out there though.

Right So I m photo 3256101-6

6.Something else crazy, but maybe too fussy? Not sure. Once more, this is a crazy idea... I just thought I'd put it out there for kicks. But if anyone thinks it would be OK, with some changes, say so!

Right So I m photo 3256101-7

I just want to have some fun with it, really. It's like playing dress-up with dolls when you were a kid... only better! Any ideas? It's probably going to be 1 or 2...

Just realised how absolutely mental I sound, giving everyone half my life story. I'm not completely mental, honest. I only dribble on alternate Thursdays...

Don't be silly, you don't sound mental at all.

I love that you're not engaged yet either, because neither am I. But due to Canadian immigration, I am technically MARRIED to my Irish sweetheart already. How unfortunate to be married with no engagement ring yet. ;)

I like the ragged idea too. Here's an image I just photoshopped quickly with the top of the dress you like. Wasn't sure if you wanted the cap sleeves, so I cropped them out, but... I can put em back in.

Keep me posted if you want me to try any more photoshop work. I'm a bored graphic designer doing monotonous design at work. The occasional wedding dress mashup is a minute and a half of entertainment. ;)

For reference, I also think this is possibly the most adorable skirt I've ever seen on a short dress.

But it may be more my style... :)

Thanks guys! To Jelbee... good call on the capped sleeves. No offence to anyone who likes capped sleeves, but I think they're pretty horrible looking. I also love love love the cute skirt you showed me, so much that I have downloaded the picture. If dressilyme works out for me, I may ask them to make me a dress like that for everyday wear in the summer (maybe in a light yellow or something?). That is... if the price is right!

I love the floaty look... but after sleeping on it then I am leaning towards skirt one (the short, A line one). Reason being that if I don't get the ring in Feb, and he catches me with that dress, I can just say "what, this old thing? Noooo... this isn't for an engagement shoot! That's crazy! This is just a dress to wear in the summer, along with a red belt, cardigan, shoes and bag!". That top with skirt 1 looks like something I would just wear every day... but I don't usually wear floaty styles, so if I get a floaty dress then he will never believe it was just by chance!

I think that we non-officially-engaged girls need to think about damage control should things go horribly wrong... which is why I am asking the opinion of total strangers on the internet rather than my friends, LOL!

PS Your photoshop skills are awesome, BTW!

Hmm... contacted Dressilyme and got this response...

Dear Rachel,

Thanks for your early reply and detailed explaination about your gowns.

I am sorry to tell you that our dressmakers could not make a new dress combined with two different style of gowns and do not recommend to make a dress with big changes in order to keep its original silhouette.Sorry for the inconvenience. Also, as you know, it will be the first time for our dressmakers to imitate a the dres according to the pictures you gave us, our dressmakers need enough confidence to guarantee the final effect for the gown. Please you can choose your favorite one from the dresses you inquired .Sorry for the inconvenience.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Paris

Note: I sent two options in. I mean, total kudos for the honesty (really respect that) but I really didn't think that they were terribly difficult to put together... a bit strange? Might contact someone else and see if I get the same response... Unless... jelbee, if you are bored, would you be able to photoshop that top and skirt 1 (lose the waistband on skirt 1 first, obviously)? It would be awesome, and maybe that might make a difference!

Awesome, thanks! I actually spoke to Landy last night... they say they can make it for me... but it would cost 189USD, which would officially make it the most expensive thing I have ever worn. By a long way. Yeuch... I'm really undecided. It would be nice to own something nice (ie properly made and boned for me) but that is one expensive dress (as far as my budget goes). Why does life have to be so tough eh?

Hmm. Well, Rach, I know you're just doing it for your engagement shoot and all, but... $189 for a custom-made dress is actually a mind-numbingly AMAZINGLY good deal. And you can totally wear it more than just for the shoot. Engagement party, as a "change-into-after-the-ceremony" dress for your reception, even for a trash-the-dress shoot if you wanted.

And hey, woman. You're getting engaged (probably ;D) and you deserve to wear something heart-stoppingly gorgeous, and made just for you.

I would go for it. You only get to be engaged once! (Hopefully!)

OK... you guys have almost convinced me... I'm getting measured today (emerged from the jungle yesterday!). Contacted Dressily with the new pic (thanks jelbee) and they still seem unsure... ask me for a few new pics... so I think perhaps not. Don't quite get why it was such a problem, but meh. Anyway, I think I may take a deep breath and go with Landy. Just nervous as 189US is about 3 times the price of the most expensive item in my wardrobe (everything I own is either super cheap or on sale!). Hope it works out.... will keep you posted...

And to suzannerice... yep, dress is lovely... the sort of thing I would wear for sure (although I still prefer jelbee's one!) which is why I don't quite get why they couldn't make me a similar style. Very odd...

It's beacuse they dont have detailed picture's of the side's and back of the dress you want them to make so maybe if you two can muster up some side and back photo's they could feel more comfortable making you the perfect dress you want <3

Right... it is done! I was running out of time (I'll need the dress done by the 18th of Feb at the LATEST, and Chinese New Year is almost upon us...) so I went with Landy, who ended up charging me 159US... still the most expensive thing I have ever worn, but I think it was a pretty good deal. Interesting time with the seamstress here getting my measurements though... I checked her measurements later, and her measurements and mine were WAY out. For some reason she decided to measure me really tightly across my chest, and then give me loads of room on my waist and hips... she measured my hips at 39 inches! I mean, I know I'm bottom heavy, but I'm only a UK size 8! I compromised and went for 38 inches in the end, but I still think that's extremely generous (I measured 36 1/2, although admittedly that didn't give much room for error). So basically I upped the seamstresses chest sizes a tad (I would have been popping out at the measurements she took!), and decreased the waist and hip sizes a little. Maybe it's the style in South East Asia to be tighter on top? Not really sure! I do remember I thought it was a little odd at the time she measured me.

Anyway, am very excited. I decided that I'll email back in 10 days to get an update as by then it should be well on the way to completion, seeing as there's no embroidery and they have the patterns already (they already make the top and skirt for different dresses). Fingers crossed!

Well! Too bad Dressilyme couldn't do it... it seems a shame. Some of the dresses I've seen have been incredible-- I'm not sure why they wouldn't be able to make it work.

I haven't seen any Landy stuff, but I hope it turns out amazing! $159 is NOTHING, and well worth it when you love it. ;)

Not sure why your seamstress's measurements would have been so off... unless you're measuring your waist and hips at a different angle or slightly different location than she did. Either way, better a bit bigger and able to be taken in than too tight and a waste of money--! :)

OK... update! So, I went with Landy bridal in the end and paid 159US, which is the most I've ever actually spent on a dress! After a long wait due to Chinese New Year, I finally got dress pics today. Here they are.Help me Design My Engagement Dress (And apologies for life story) : wedding LD1521aHelp me Design My Engagement Dress (And apologies for life story) : wedding LD1521cHelp me Design My Engagement Dress (And apologies for life story) : wedding LD1521dHelp me Design My Engagement Dress (And apologies for life story) : wedding LD1521fNow, some of the most obvious issues (the hemline not being quite right, for example, and the box pleats not "popping" like they should do) are just because it is satin and needs a good steaming, I think. I asked for the bottom gather on the waist to be corrected, and for the fabric buttons I asked for to be added onto the back to cover the zipper. Other than that... pretty good! Opinions?

PS And I should also say that I am now the proud owner of a shiny shiny engagement ring! Hooray!
