hotel block

Are hotel blocks really necessary? I've flown out to a few weddings and never used the hotel block mainly due to price. Maybe I'm just cheap, but if I'm already paying for the plan ticket, a hotel room for over $150 is too much and I end up going with priceline or hotwire.

We did one for our wedding, but we had about 50 guests flying in. We thought it would be fun for the guests to have rooms near each other so we blocked a floor at a Marriott.

If you have only a few guests flying in, it's probably not necessary although some people appreciate it.

It would be nice to have everyone nearby each other, especially if it's a fairly large hotel. I think it's mainly good for relatives of the couple though, in case some families are spread apart and now they get a chance to be close to each other. It kinda sucks that some hotels force the couple to book some rooms if they use the hotel for the reception/wedding.

We did because about 2/3 of our guests are flying or driving some hours to get here.  I want them all with us for those couple days.  That means just as much to me as them being at the wedding.  I think it will be fun hanging with everyone in all 3 floors we have reserved!  Just be sure to reserve in increments to ensure you fill them all.

we did it because it is saving our guests a butt-load of money. They are getting rooms for $110 a night at a hotel that usually charges $220 and the other hotel is $210 a night and they normally charge $450.

So we did it for their sake  :-)

in my case no

their "special" rate was a mere $10 off their advertised rates - plus i dont want to dictate where people stay - different guests have different needs and budgets... so i just advised to book early and our wedd-site has about 10 different options close to aour venues in all price ranges and "styles"

We tried but no luck.  We're not getting married at a hotel so we asked the hotel where I'm staying the night before the wedding and the wedding night if we could do a block at discounted rates.  They said that since we're not getting married there, they wouldn't do it.  Whatever...
