How do you feel about Bridal Expos?

Well, through the planning I never really felt the desire to go to them because I had PW :D

My friend is now getting married, her family thinks that going to an expo is going to be the greatest thing for her.

What has been your experience?

Do you think expos are helpful?

I went to one. I don't like it. But, to each their own. I don't like the high pressure situations, people all around me, loud noises, being told you get a "great deal" if you sign that day but you have no chance to shop around, and the endless amounts of crap people want you to sign up for.

But some women go, love it, and win a ton of free stuff!

I didn't like the one I went to, other than it was at Fenway Park and I wound up with a free tour of the park with my BM's =P Too much spam email followed (I recomend if you go set up a wedding vendor emial account. That way your personal doesn't get flooded out.) and I really didn't get much out of it. I already had a lot planned before I went. Some people love them though. I've heard of people winning great prizes. GL!

I went to two expos - and it was ok. Not such great ideas as I had found on PW, but it was ok. But I don't want to go one again :)

ChancesAre

I only go to one, and it's called The Great Bridal Expo, it is held at the Loews Hotel.  While very crowded...I have never experienced the forced sales/deals in the three times I have gone, and the signing up for things at this particular one is to win the numerous prizes they offer, but for those, I have seperate Email address so I don't get bugged.

My first time going, I won a $500 gift check for a wedding gown & $1000 off of a Photography package.  The second time I went, I won a Bridal gift Basket.

My favorite part is the Fashion Show..where you get to see the newest bridal gowns/bm dresses/tuxedos in "action".  To me, they are just fun, and a small part of the "bride" experience.  I have seen brides come with their BMs in matching t-shirts and all...just a fun time had by everyone.

I can't wait for our wedding to be over because then the DARN PHONE CALLS WILL STOP. It was an ok experience for me. I wouldn't say it was a waste of time, but it was a little overwhelming. "What?!?! You don't have a dress yet!!" (I still had 1 year!) "What?!?!?! You haven't picked out your venue yet!!" Any who, PW is way better.

I went to one that i didn't find very helpful at all, and now i get tons of emails with marketing info. I tried to go to another one, but the line was so ridiculous that we just left. Honestly I think I have gotten better advice and found great vendors here on PW and through recommendations from my friends.

I went to a really large one with my girlfriend, and hated it... people will literally step right in front of you to make you stop and talk to them.

Then, my mom and I went to a smaller "boutique" show and I loved it!  There was zero pressure from any of the vendors, and we ended up meeting our officiant there.

I've been to one that was not so bad, one that was a catering "tasting" (for a caterer we did not end up going with) and had a bunch of vendors there, one at my alma mater which wasn't horrible, and then one here in South Florida with one of my BMs who is getting married in April.  OH MY GOD.  I am ready to pull my hair out over the number of phone calls & e-mails I've been getting about this mess.  My BM will not want to attend any expos again.

Another thing - BE VERY WARY about anyone who offers you anything for free, particularly not on the spot.  We "won" $1000 worth of photography from a company (not one found at a bridal show, even, just a list I might have signed up for?  a contest?) and we checked out their parent company on Better Business Buereau.  They received an F from the BBB.  And we said um no.

I worry that the purpose of some of these larger ones is to prey on people who don't have the information or know where to find it online.  Hence one of the great purposes of PW.

I'll be dragging FI to one on Sunday. I SOOOO want to go on Saturday because they're doing a bride's breakfast with Randy from SYTTD (SQUEALS!) but I have a funeral to go to so I won't be able to do that =/

I haven't been to one as of yet, so I've gotta try it at least once, right?

I've only been to one - my BFF and I went together since we were both newly engaged at the time.  It was fun and I'm glad I went, but in all honesty I've gotten way more inspiration and ideas on here than I did that day.

I would suggest going to atleast one, just to have that experience under your belt!  ;)

I didn't go for inspiration so to speak, but I've been to three so far and I am registered for about 3 more in the upcoming months. I've legit won teeth whitening for the wedding. I'm a marketer by profession and I am usually a vendor at expos (though a completely unrelated field) so I know how to get around the sales pitch. The one benefit to going is that you get to meet several vendors face to face in one location. I knew right away that I wanted the photographer we hired. We clicked right away just from chatting at an expo. I ran into him again at another expo, set up an appointment to bring the fiance to meet him and within minutes of the fiance meeting him we both knew...this was the guy we would want in our face all day. Same thing with the dj. For me it was a matter of convienence. I knew I'd meet a ton of people and be able to sift through more quickly than just going on recommendations or doing my own research.

I personally didn't ask the fiance to go, because he would have wanted to gouge his eyes out within minutes, so I asked my MOH to one, and my BM to the others. We had fun at all of them... For the nominal fee it costs to get in...they usually stuff you with food and drink for the night. Where else can you get a $5 four course meal? Just think of it like going to a bar....you don't give your personal information to every guy at the place...so don't give it to every vendor. You do have the option of saying no.

I've been to two and didn't mind it too much. They weren't really pushy and even if they were I didn't have any money at the time of them. I didn't get tons of ideas, but it was nice to see what was all offered. They did give out prizes every hour :) And vendors often had great deals. I didn't have money to book my DJ at the time but they had a deal that if you book that day you save $100. Plus one that I went to gave me a huge book of coupons to use at TONS of their vendors in Sioux Falls and Sioux City and the coupons are AWESOME! I got $100 of my DJ, $20% wedding photographer, 20% paper for invites, and they have lots of other things I don't have money for like awesome dance lesson session coupons! I think they were deffinetly worth it, but that was just my experience in Sioux City, I don't know how other places are.
