How much do you pay for a String Quartet during the Ceremony?

I really want to have a string quartet, but don't really know how much I should pay one.  I have friends who are willing to do it, which is more meaningful to me, but I still want to pay them.  Maybe not as much as strangers, but still for their services.  I would be asking them to be available for pre-ceremony music for about 15 minutes, then the processional, one hymn, and the recessional.  This would be a total of one hour of their time.  What do you think would be a reasonable payment?

ohhh, craigslist is a good idea.  i didn't know how to get music students, since i heard that would be the cheapest option.  i'm trying to keep my budget for the quartet under $300, so we'll see

I was told $700 per hour. That was too much for me.

We ended up hiring a violinist 150 per hour and 75 for an additional one.

It would have been around $600 for ceremony. We opted to use a trio at $400 instead, and they sound WONDERFUL ( same people as the quartet -1 of course)

I believe i was quoted $550-$1200 (a few different companies) for a quartet. We ended up going with a duet and it was $350.

yeah, so they just told me they don't want my money, but i feel like i should still give some money, right?  i think $50 each for a quartet sounds reasonable.  if they are offering it as my gift, that is still an acceptable tip right?

I played for a friend's wedding, and it was my gift to her; she got me a giftcard, even though I said she didn't need to pay me!

Do you think people would prefer a gift card or cash for this type of thing?
