How to Get Silky Hair?

I have long (past my shoulders) brunette hair with highlights.  I'm sure I could pay my stylist a ton to do some fabulous hair treatment next week when I see her for my last trip before the wedding - but I don't want to.  I want to hear your fabulous at home remedies/treatments to attain silky locks.

I'm less that a month out, you'd think I would've posted this before now.

I use Queen Helene's Cholesterol Conditioning Creme.  It's so cheap - like $4 - and they sell it everywhere.

I put on a shower cap and wrap my head in a warm wet towel.  I leave it on for an hour or so.

I use and swear by biosilk.  You can get it anywhere no a days.  Use only a little bit on your finger tips and put it on your ends and maybe a little throughout your hair.  Its amazing.  Smells so nice too but your hair will feel really good.  And its not oily after the day is over.  You'll just have a healthy shine.  I also use it before blowdrying or flat ironing my hair-it protects it from spliting -I don't knwo my hairdresser said it 's b/c its a good coatign for your hair before you do all that stuff to your hair :)

fortunately my hair is pretty silky w/o alot of products, but for the times i need to blowdry it or flatiron it - i use wella

remember your hair and nails are already dead - dead protien just growing out of our bodies - hydrate from within and dont over-process your hair and it should be ok as is w/o too much help from products...

uh i dont know how well it works, but i've also heard of mayo and avocado in hair??

I have very thick, highlighted hair. I have tried everything- Bed head, Biolage deep conditioner, Biosilk for styling, Pantene (great product at drugstore pricing), Bumble and Bumble, you name it, I've tried it. Now, I only use Kerastase. It's the best you can get. Very pricey but totally worth every penny. Even if you just get the deep conditioning mask and use 1-2 times a week, you will see a really big difference.

I usually buy the salon size shampoo and conditioner from ebay, there are some reputable sellers. It's ~$100 for the huge bottle but it lasts a year or longer (no joke, I just opened my 2nd bottle of conditioner). So if you use my rationale, $100/yr=27 cents/day :) I know, I know, what I have to tell my self....Really, it works great!

Do hot oil and then wash it out. Coconut oil is good and so is Olive oil. You can lightly saute in some herbs too. Comfrey, Nettles, Rosemary, Calenduala, lavender are all good. Just strain the herbs and heat up the oil each time in the jar by running hot water over the jar. You can sleep with the oil in you hair. Just wash out three time. Do not attempt this more than 3 days before your wedding.

Shiny hair comes from a healthy kindey/liver... So for long lasting shine strenthen the Kidney and the Liver...

I have done avocado... It's hard to wash out and my husband says I smell like POW avo...

We have so many avocados here dropping from the trees, we get more than we can eat so I have experimented and I have a lot of hair. So, maybe an avo hair treatment from Burts Beez might work better than my overripe avos...

Oh I have the perfect thing. I get it at Sally beauty supply. I use it once a month. You leave it in your hair for 15 minutes then rinse. It has the protein that hair is made out of, so it repairs the keratin in your hair. I love it! My hair stylist told me about it.

i second what kohler says about not washing your hair too much.  it sounds gross but i only wash mine every 5 or 6 days.  it takes a few weeks for your scalp to get used to it but it will stop over producing oil.  my hair is a lot stronger because the ends don't get so dried out.

My hair is very straight, about 5 inches past my shoulders and extremely prone to drying. I get that "straw" look very easily, even just a couple of days after a haircut.

I've had luck with hot oil treatments in the past. I'd usually do one or two a week before an event.

Taking fish oil really helps your hair become healthier and shiny. It makes your nails and skin look better too, in my opinion. But, it's not an immediate result. You won't really notice changes in your hair until it grows out because the hair that's already there is essentially dead cells.

The best product that I use every day now is a spray conditioner by Sexy Hair. It's called Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner. It's really awesome. It's light and doesn't make my hair feel heavy or look oily. I can spray it on when my hair is either wet or dry. I totally swear by it now.

Good luck!

  • Wash hair in cold water – Just the suggestion of washing your hair in cold water may send a chill up your spine, but washing your hair in hot water is damaging. You know that heat is bad for your hair and causes split ends. Heat also takes away any natural oil.  Plus it's like an instant wake-me-up!   Brrrrr!

  • Besides washing you hair with cold water, also rinse out your conditioner with cold water. While hot water takes away the conditioner, cold water locks the conditioner into your hair, close to the follicles. Let the conditioner stay in your hair at least five minutes before washing it out. If you don’t give it time to do its job, your hair won’t look like it’s even been conditioned.

  • When drying hair, aim your blow dryer down the hair shaft. The direct hit of the airflow will smooth the cuticle. Otherwise, air pushes the cuticle up, causing frizz. Using the cool shot button, once your hair is almost dry, will seal the hair cuticle, and will keep your hair smooth and silky.

theDame Flax seeds regrow the villa on your intestines and allow your to absorb your nutrients... This is why it helps to grow shinny healthy hair. BTW Try a simple flax seed tea first thing every morning. You can use it for a hair rinse too...

i second kerastase products. super pricy but totally worth it. i agree with not washing your hair daily. i wash mine every other day. sometimes every 3rd day if it feels ok. and i totally agree with washing your hair with cold water. it seals the little cuticles on your hairs and makes it smooth and shiny.

i used to use Bed Head Dumbe Blonde products until they stopped being effective. Then i went on to Redkin for about three years until they too lost their effectiveness. I think your hair gets used to certain products so its good to change it up a bit. I used Biosilk rarely when i straighten my hair. Its super important to use a quality flat iron. I got mine from Sephora for $240 bucks and well worth it. It hasnt damaged my hair in the many years I've had it!

Right now, I only use 100% Coconut Oil that I get from Whole Foods in the vitamin section. It is actually also used for cooking! But I read it works wonders so i thought i'd give it a shot. And for the first time in my life, i can wear my curly hair down without it looking frizzy or knatted! Use very little. A dab or two and rub it on your palms and then over your hair just like you would Biosilk. MIRACULOUS!
