HSG Test on Wednesday

I am having an HSG test this Wednesday and wanted to get some feedback on what it was like.  My doctor gave me a prescription for some muscle relaxers to take before the procedure, so now this has freaked me out that it is really going to be painful :/

I've had 2. Is your RE going to perform it? I have heard that it is more painful if your tubes are blocked. The radiologists that did mine were awful. For #1, the guy used a a ton of pressure and actually opened my right tube and tried to use a ton of pressure to open the left. The secoond radiologist was worse. He didn't have to do anything to open the right, it was patent but had me tilt and lift my hip to try to get the dye to flow out the left. This is not the norm though!

I believe my RE is preforming it.  The receptionist at his office said he could only do the procedure on a Wednesday so that makes me me think that he is doing it because otherwise it could have been done any day of the week.

I have heard horror stories of radiologists doing it - One of my friends said they didn't know how to use a speculum (sp?) correctly and it was awful.

mine was done by the radiologist....at a surgery center not at the RE's office...it was quite uncomfortable, i had to turn a few different ways....and it's messy cleanup....but i didn't have any cramping afterwards or anything...and didn't take anything beforehand....i believe i did have to be on some antibiotics thou...like 2 days before and 3 days after....but the good thing is they show you right on the monitor so you won't have to wait for results.

Thanks Jackie...yeah they gave me antibiotics as well.  Not looking forward to it but it is part of it....I am beginning to be completely numb about being poked and examined by so many people now...

Hopefully the end result will be worth it!

good luck!  it's kinda crazy to see how long and thin and twisty the tubes actually are....not at all like those anatomical diagrams we are so familiar with....it's a miracle anybody ever gets pregnant....

Lots of women I know have had them done with little discomfort. I was not so lucky. I had mine done by a radiologist at the hospital. I took 2 tylenol and advil before hand. He had to manupulate my cervix into position with the speculum which hurt like heck and the worst part after that was the dye. I won't lie it was the most painful thing I have put myself through. I had sever cramps during the procedure and was in tears by the end, I would never do it again without some sort of light sedation. But again my case sounds to be the abnormal experience.

Good luck!

Mine was done by a radiologist at the hospital. Maybe I was lucky, or maybe it's because neither of my tubes were blocked, but I've honestly had paps that were more uncomfortable. I was advised to take some Advil before the appointment, and was also glad I brought my own pantyliner (like Jackie said - messy cleanup).

Is this the dye test to ensure your tubes aren't blocked? If so, I need to do one of these once my blood tests come back and show I'm not pregnant. I didn't think it was a big deal but the way you guys are talking, you have me scared! Mine will be done at the hospital - is that not good? My doc is sending me for this prior to my RE apt.

I had a radiologist at a hospital do mine. I agree with danidabi--it was the most painful thing I've had to go through. It hurt like he**, but I had a blocked tube.  It'll hurt less if there isn't any blockage.  I think it will help that your doctor gave you muscle relaxers.  I was so tense because I didn't know what to expect.   It's something you only want to go through once, but like you said it's just part of the journey.

Thanks for giving me honest feedback - Now I can prepare myself and I just have to keep thinking of the bigger picture - After it is done it will be one less thing I have looming over me.

I have to say that it hurt more than I expected. I am pretty tough usually but during the procedure there was an intense pinching sensation. It kind of took my breath away. That feeling went away as soon as the procedure was over but then (about 30minutes later) I got very strong AF type cramps that lasted for a few hours. It was not bad enough pain to make me feel like I needed to lie down or take off work or anything but strong enough for pain killers (and I was still uncomfortable). All in all it was not absolutely terrible but I wish I had expected more than just a little discomfort.
Here is a post of mine with more details on the "ick" that I ended up experiencing afterwards.
fyi- Mine was done by my RE at my doctor's office (in the radiology dept downstairs) and I had an appt with him immediately afterwards to review the results in more detail and discuss next steps. Both of my tubes were clear.
Good luck!! :)

I just got a confirmation call from my RE's office - He is the one that does the procedure.  He instructed me to take 600 mg of Ibuprofen and then an hour later to take my Valium.  I will let everyone knows how it goes..
