hubby is applying, whats life like?

Hubby is applying become a firefighter (he's also applying for police as well) and I'm glad he's motivated into applying to these jobs (we are currently both unemployed), but sometimes i worry about this career choice (like safety, etc).

So, what is life like being married (or engaged) to a firefighter? What are the best and worst parts? Thanks!

My husband loves his job, he and my father both say it is the best job in the world.  He loves going to work everyday.  It's great that they really think of each other as brothers.

I think the best part about being a firefighters wife is the sense of pride I feel for what he does. It takes an extremely special type of person to risk their life everyday for others...to me it's humbling that I've married such a selfless person.

One of the worst parts would have to be the time we don't see each other. It's a pretty big time commitment...and he is just as devoted to the station as he is to me. I share him with the station and the other firefighters he shifts with and that can sometimes be hard.

As far as being worried about his safety that used to bother me but I've learned that however much I worry or don't worry isn't going to change what happens to him. I had let go and know that DH knows what he's doing and would never put himself in a situation he didn't think he could handle. I also have to trust that his crew is just as skilled and knowledgable as DH and when they work as a team and as a unit the likelihood of something happening is slim.

Above all I love DH and support what makes him happy...and being a firefighter makes him happy. :)

My FI is a volunteer fireman, also the Lt for his FD. What is really hard about that is he is on call 24/7. He always has his radio and pager. We could have just sat down to dinner on a nice date and his pager goes off - guess what, we cancel our order and rush out as fast as we can. I used to worry so much too. There was one night I hadn't heard from him in hours and I almost went to the ER to ask if any firemen had been brought in (I'm an RN so I knew the employees). But after being with him for four years I'm more used to it. the bigger the fire I do worry more but I also have a support system in the other fireman's wives. They are amazing. And the guys do all look out for each other - in and out of the FD. And my FI is so passionate about his job. He loves it and looks forward to it which makes me love him even more. Firefighting is more than a job, it is a passion and a way of life, it is part of them; without it I know my FI would not be the man he is.
