I have too much time on my hands
It's amazing how much there is to think about when you're not working. lol
We've been talking about relocating for awhile now, so I've been researching where we might want to go. I'm really digging pretty much everything about Maine. I've been focusing my efforts there for the last week or so. I found one really weird statistic. They have a very high rate of cancer. There seems to be some debate about the reasoning.
Anyway, it really just made me think about how much of what we are is genetic, and how much is environmental, etc. Look at the huge amount of children being diagnosed with autism, ADD, etc. Is the incidence so high now because environmental factors have changed, or is it something that's always been there, but now we're really looking for it? Maybe it's a combo of both?
I strongly feel that most of our capabilities are already decided at birth. It then becomes a matter of what we choose to do with them. My brother and I were both in every gifted program that was available growing up. Heck, they started some new ones just for me. My mom did work with us as kids, but I don't think she could have potty trained at 9 months and had us reading by 4 if it wasn't something we were going to be capable of. We ASKED her to teach us to read. My older 2 have been in the same boat, only now the PC term is "highly able". I don't know why that cracks me up, but it does. I have to believe that there is some genetic link there. It can't just be chance or environment.
Ok, I'm rambling. lol Too much time on my hands! I'm just wondering what you all think about this. Now that you have babies on the way, it's really something to think about.
