I'm back and I'm a mama!

Heeeey girls! I have been MIA from the group because I became a MAMA last week!!!

My little man, Leo Gray, was born on Sunday, July 14th.

After all the worries about timing their arrival, my parents made it in time for the birth! I’d had some false labor pains over the July 4th weekend and we decided it was probably best if my parents came soon after that. They flew in on Sunday, July 7th. And then we waited…and waited. It was frustrating because we were sure that something would be happening soon. We were all getting calls and texts daily asking for an update. I was afraid my parents were going to have to return home before the baby was born. I had a doctor’s appointment on July 9th and I was still only 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced. I was crushed!

Last Saturday (my due date – July 13th), I felt kind of off all day. I was tired and lethargic, and I didn’t get off the couch all day. After feeling perfectly fine the last few weeks, I just knew things were different. That night, we went out to dinner. I told DH that I was pretty sure we would be having the baby in the next 24 hours. I didn't want to get my parents’ hopes up, so we didn't say anything to them.

Sure enough, by 1:00 AM that night, I started having contractions. They were about 8 - 10 minutes apart, so I thought we had plenty of time before we had to go to the hospital. At 3:00 AM, I woke up my DH and then we woke my parents up. Then it got crazy. As soon as I woke everyone up, my labor progressed rapidly. Out of nowhere, my contractions were suddenly on top of each other (2 - 3 minutes apart) and extremely intense. The hospital is 45 minutes away, and we had never really considered that I might have a fast labor. Everything you learn during pregnancy tells you that first babies/labors take forever!  We made it to the hospital around 5:00 AM. They told me I was already 8 cm dilated and everyone - myself included - was in shock! But I was actually a bit relieved to hear I was that far along. The pain was so intense that I couldn’t imagine it getting much stronger. The hospital staff couldn’t believe I was so far along before I arrived. (I told them it was not on purpose!)

The nurses gave me an intravenous painkiller (can’t remember the name) and almost immediately I felt really out of it. It helped the pain a little bit, but I could still feel everything. I was experiencing back labor, and it was awful. They told me it was too late for an epidural, which I had assumed when they told me I was 8 cm dilated. Surprisingly, a couple minutes later, they came back and said I could get an epidural if I made the decision immediately. My DH made the call: "Please give it to her!" Once I got the epidural, it was all good! The relief was instant! I was hoping to have a completely natural labor, but the pain was just too much. Knowing that I would only be on the epidural for a couple hours made it a much easier decision. From beginning to end, my labor was the best possible experience. Exhausting but very calm and peaceful. The midwife dimmed the lights and it was just her, two nurses, my DH and my mom in the room with me. I pushed for about an hour and then little Leo came into the world at 9:46 AM. It was the best moment of my life - instant tears from everyone! Followed by complete shock when the midwife said, "8 lbs, 5 oz!" They had predicted he would be around 7 pounds at my last doctor’s visit, so everyone was stunned that he was so big! They placed him on my chest immediately and I just stared at him in joy and disbelief. After about 20 minutes, he latched on for his first feeding. I was hopeful that it would be the start of a good BF relationship, and so far so good! (Painful, but good!)

{ I can add some TMI details for anyone who is curious about some of the nitty gritty stuff like my mucus plug, water breaking, tearing/stitches, etc. I left them out, but I know I was obsessed with other people’s experiences with that stuff over the last few weeks of my pregnancy! :-) }

We are settling in nicely at home. Some days our little man is on a great schedule and other days we are flying by the seat of our pants because he is dictating a different pace. But we are figuring it all out. Breastfeeding is going extremely well! It is definitely hard, but I am just taking it one feeding at a time. My DH has been amazing and has gone above and beyond from the moment I went into labor. He has been my rock and I am having so much fun on this new adventure with him.

We sure love our little guy!!!!
