insane sticker shock - wedding planning

So i just got off the phone with a wedding planner and apparently she charges a little under 30k dollars for full wedding planning but she offered me a cheaper option to have a wedding planned by her assistant for about 20k. I just about died! I had to have her repeat the cost twice because I didn't believe it. INSANE.

That is pricy, and I'd guess she is quite established with that price.  I think I've heard full service planning should cost 10% (or is it 20%) or your budget.  Do as much as you can, and then just hire a DOC (day or coordinator).  That way someone steps in leading up to the wedding, handles all vendors the day of, and handles all the day of details.  Then do all the planning yourself.  There was a poll the other day, and a bride who hired a full service planner said it was a regret.  PW helped her plan all the details anyway, and she really just needed someone to execute them the day of.

I'm doing all the planning myself and I have a DOC.  If I have a question she is more than happy to help, otherwise she'll be stepping in a month before.

Maybe that was inclusive of all of your floral, linens, and rentals... I hope anyway.

WELL, if she's the one buying everything then she's worth it otherwise nevermind, with 20K I put it as downpayment for my house.

Uh...all set with that - yikes!  That's more than 10X what not-even-the-cheapest wedding planners go for in my area :)  Maybe @LadyESQ's right - all inclusive for her to plan AND pay for your wedding?!  Haha.  Moving along down your list...

Yeah, I guess I always assumed those prices included a lot of the wedding elements and not just services.  What is the deal with the pricing?

HAHA no not even! It didn't include anything but the planning alone. No flowers, no rentals etc.. She even said that planning the rehearsal dinner and brunch afterward would be extra! Crazy.

Use PW to help you plan it yourself (we're awesome, I promise!), and then research a DOC :-)

yea, that happen to me in the beginning of my wedding planning process. I spoke to this super nice spunky wedding planner, we totally hit it off then she asked me my budget. After trying her best not to choke on her drink she proceeded to tell me that she charges her clients $30k minimum! and her DOC cost is over $2k!

My jaw dropped but she was super cool about it.

I thought you were going to say Cowie or Tuterra...sorry but for that...I expect a celebrity level planner! I wonder how much Martha Stewart would charge? teeehee. Yeah if I were you I would go with a Day of Ceremony person. Otherwise it might turn into their wedding instead of being  yours! I am so freaking lucky...my second choice (first one quit - thankfully!) of MOH is one of my closest friends and she's a Ortho doc. She's taken the two weeks prior off of work to come and help out. It's going to be fun and FREE!

Good luck!

Please hold while I pick my jaw up off of the floor...

Yeah. PW has your back for planning! And we're friggin free :) A DOC or just a different planner would be a much better route. Sheesh!

What1?!? That's insane. I probably would've dropped the floor and would have to pick up my jaw from the floor if I heard that.  She must be established, but even so that  is pretty expensive.
