Is is possible to planning a wedding under $5,000 -$10,000 for 300 people in chicago

My bf and I are planning to get married but are not sure if we can afford it. Before actually starting to plan the whole thing and telling our family we need to see if we are able to pay for it on our own. We made a list and have cut it down sooo much we are stuck at 300 people PURE family --coming from a hispanic backgrounds we both are very close  and have extremely large  family. Sadly because of this we are not able to invite our friends which am pretty sure they will understand (hopefully). Is it possible or should we just hitch hick to vegas and do it the easy way out.

It's VERY doable!! You've come to the right place, too.  TONS of ideas on PW!!  Look for DIY projects that can save you money..

Yes.  You can get married for $5-10K.  But it all depends on what you are looking for - reception with open bar in a swanky hotel?  Probably not.  Renting a pavillion at a public park with donated items?  Yes you can!  Good luck!

It is somewhat doable, but i see your from Chicago area like me and its pretty expensive to have weddings at places..if you want a nice sit down dinner its ranges from like 60-200 dollars a person in the city and around 30-150 in thesuburbs.  You could get around 8 dollars off a person if you did a Friday night wedding or sunday night.  There are other stuff you can make for cheap, but I would say 5000 is kinda hard to do for 300 people..thats a lot of people...say your meal was the low end like 30 a person..thats already 9000 dollars...so you would have to do a different route then dinner

I am pulling off a 5K wedding for 150 guests. It is possible. You are going to have to be really creative with your large guest list to pull it off, but you have come to the right place. These girls will help you find venues, vendors, and DIY everything you need.

Oh ps, craigslist is your friend :) I found my photographer and DOC free on there. My venue was also free. I am using a GORGEOUS public park that is new and practically untouched by the public. I am doing my own flowers (buying them from sams club) we are doing our own food (family with cooking background) and our own alcohol.

And at the end of the day. My wedding will be just as perfect as a million dollar wedding if not more. You can do it!

I'll be honest with you. I'm pulling off a wedding for under 5k for 120 guests...and I have a lot of help from friends.

Certain things like location, cake, photos and dj are free...and it's very tight.

300 people is going to be challenging, but do-able.

I think running to vegas, inviting everyone to come if they want (on their dime) and having a big dinner with everyone would be a great idea :)

You could probably find a way to do it, but it will be challenging with the large guest list. Maybe you could have a reception that is strictly punch and dessert instead of a full meal. Honestly, I know a lot of people might say it sounds cheap, but as a guest I would rather be only served that than not be able to come to the wedding of two people that I love because the budget doesn't allow for a big guest list.

Can any of the 300 help?

*Does anyone have a house with enough bathrooms and a yard large enough to do a backyard wedding?

*Is there anyone that could make your cake?

*You could do your reception pot luck style and have everyone bring a dish.

*Are there any officiants and/or florists in the fam?

You can do it!

It's very do-able. Here are three examples of weddings that are around your budget and located in very expensive areas. The trick is to research (there are lots of listings and reviews on Project Wedding), and to put your own personal touch on your wedding.

Christina planned a fabulous wedding in LA for les than $10K, which is an extremely expensive area. http://www.projectwedding.com/real_wedding/show/christina-ted-moorpark-ca

Nole planned a gorgeous wedding near Washington DC for less than $14K. http://www.projectwedding.com/real_wedding/show/nole-andrew-sandy-spring-md

Yuli and Keith pulled off an awesome wedding in New York with a very modest budget. It's one of the most beautiful weddings I've seen! http://www.projectwedding.com/real_wedding/show/yuli-keith-hancock-ny

OMG! I cannot say how soothing it is just to hear you all and your posts! My FH and I have hit some major financial issues and I am having to re-plan my entire wedding! We are due to get married in 4 1/2 months in Vegas and I need to do it for under $5k! We have a guest list of 75 people. Any ideas, advice, comments, anything would be so much help! Thank you so much! =)

300 people?? yikes! I wouldn't bet on it. I would save some extra just incase you go over- which I am assuming you will.

If you do a simple cake and punch reception, I think you could pull off the $10k side of things for 300. It's the reception that people blow all their money on and, when you think about it seriously, the wedding is the CEREMONY and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to shift all the focus from the actual wedding to the party afterwards. If you're willing to sacrifice a sit-down dinner you could def do 300 for 10k. Now, 5k.....I'm not so sure. That's only $15 per person at the reception and would leave $500 for absolutely everything else. It might be possible but the idea of that just boggles my mind. If these other girls are saying it's been done for 300 people, it's been done....but I've never seen it for $5000. :(

Can I ask why there has to be 300 people? FI and I had a similar issue with budget so we cut things down to just family and the wedding party pretty much. Only 45 people. I asked myself which people I would be DEVASTATED to have to cut from the guest list and those were the only ones who stayed on. I also invited FMIL's family which I'm actually hoping doesn't show up but that's another story altogether. :)

I'm not quite sure you could pull off a wedding for 300 ppl for $5,000...$10,000 is more likely..but if there's a way to cut back the guest list your money will definitely go further.

Good luck w/the wedding planning!
