Joint Account

Do you guys have joint accts? I was bad and dipped into ours without telling him and now we are arguing big time! I know it was wrong of me and I don't know how to make it right. I already apologized. I should have been honest with him from the start. But its just as much my money as it is his. I don't know I guess I'm having a issue with whats mine is his and what his is mine. How does everyone else deal with this?

We don't have a joint account.  We are planning to get one soon, but we will just put enough in there for bills.  Sorry I couldn't help.  :(

All of our money goes into joint accounts...nothing is separate.

We have two accounts.  A joint account and he has his account (which we are closing soon...we don't use it very much).  We used to have separate accounts but it was just too hard to pay bills like that so we opened the joint account.

we have some joint, some separate. But I gotta tell ya.... If my DH did what you said you did, take out money without discussing it with me, I'd be doing the same as your DH and insisting on separate accounts now. Like you said, it's HIS money as much as it is yours right?

We have a couple of household rules in general with spending money....if one of us wants to make a purchase over $50 it must be discussed before buying. If it's over $100 then we both have to agree on it before buying, no matter what.

You two should probably sit down and openly discuss each of your definitions about what you think is acceptable and what is not, what you both think is "yours and his". It's easy to assume that you're on the same page, but when you really discuss what exactly you each think about these things you might be surprised. Once you have set the rules and boundaries that you're both comfortable with and agree on, you can begin to earn back his trust by sticking to them.

We have a joint account for all household items and we both have separate checking accounts for personal stuff. I can go to the mall and spend *MY* money without permission or feeling guilty. He can do the same. Purchases over $200 from any account warrant a conversation. We also have all our accounts on mint.com which helps for tracking and transparency. We both know where our money is going (which can be tricky around holiday/birthdays) but it's worth it to us to not get into disagreements about finances.

I suggest setting up some ground rules around finances at the very least, and maybe going to separate accounts if it seems to be a sore spot.

ditto beatie....we have only joint accounts....either of us can spend any amount we want to w/o having to "clear" it with the other person first....we're not 12....now out of common courtesy, we would probably discuss any purchases over $500 say....but we are both responsible and make nearly the same money.....

We each kept our own accounts but had the other one put on each other's.  (Does that make sense?)  So we both have access to everything.

We just added me to his account and that will be our joint account. Mine is staying open until my credit card is payed off so I don't have to switch it with them. I am then going to close mine. He might later open another one just for him but I prefer joint so that we know where our money is going. I am also crappy with money and he is great so he will keep me in check.

while we were planning we opened up a joint account to save for the wedding.  now after the wedding we have a joint cc, savings and checking.  we each have our own separate accounts that way we can spend money for stuff like me getting a pedi and DH getting rugby gear.  it works for us so that is how we do it.

We have a joint account for shared bills for the "household". We also have our own separate accounts where we spend our money on items that we HAVE to have. =)

We each kept our own separate accounts and then opened a joint account. We have direct deposit of certain amounts from our separate accounts into the joint one to cover all the joint expenses like groceries and household bills. Then we each do whatever we want with the $ in our separate accounts. If I want to splurge on a $250 purse and I have enough in my separate account after covering all of our joint needs, I can do it.

We've kept everything separate....we say we're going to open a joint account but haven't yet.  We each pay half of the mortgage and have divied up the other bills - I pay electric, phone, and food bills...and he pays the cable, gas, and water. Its worked well for us so far, but I do want to get a joint account because he's always late paying the bills and it annoys me!

We have a joint account and our own separate accounts.  We each get an "allowance" and any extra cash we come into on our own (extra work, 2nd job, birthdays) for our separate accounts to save or spend as we desire. We are using joint funds to develop a savings, make all joint purchases, including entertainment.
